KOL HASHONEH HALACHOT BECHOL YOM MUVTACH LO SHEH'HOO BEN HA'OLAM HABA

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel For the Refua Shlema of Chai Yaakov ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:

1. It is a minhag (custom) for the Bechorot (first-borns) to fast during Erev Pesach (this Friday), whether the person is a first born from his mother or father. First borns fast today because of the great nes (miracle) that Hashem did for them during Yetziyat Mitzrayim, where He killed all the Egyptian first-borns and not a single Jew. However, for those first borns who have eye pains are exempt from fasting, because this fast was not formed from the ikar Halacha (the foundation of Jewish Law) and a peron who is suffering is not obligated to fast.

2. In these past generations where a weakeness has befallen us and fasting causes a great bothersome in the process of Lel HaSeder, drinking the 4 glasses of wine and eating Matzah and Marror etc., today’s Bechorim have the minhag (custom) to simply participate in a Seudat Siyum Masechet, a Seuda of a Hatan and Kalah during the 7 days of the Sheva Berachot or Seudat Brit Milah and become exempt from fasting. These first borns who participate in these celebratory meals do not have to make up for their act of ‘skipping’ the fast by fasting another day after Pesach.

CLD #555

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.

What does it mean to be free? On Lel Shabbat in 6 days Be’ezrat Hashem we will be celebrating Lel HaSeder 5772! Aren’t you excited?! But wait, we have been doing this same 'ritual' for the past I don’t even know how many years and it hasn’t even changed since!

The sad part is true, we are still stuck in our 3rd grade version of what Pesach is all about. We don’t see it as something so personal, something relevant at all to our everyday lives or something that brings a connection with us and the most important people around us. The fact is that Yetziyat Mitzrayim is a core pillar of Judaism and the Torah HaKdosha. Besides for the Emunah that was seen from Am Yisrael during this time, especially since Am Yisrael believed in such great intensity in Hashem’s power and might to take us out of Egypt, it is also something that exists TODAY on such a personal level!

Mitzrayim was a country where one would get in and not leave. It is a place of narrow mindedness with Hashem’s presence barely felt. It is a place where know one believed. It is the 50 levels of Tumah (impurity, spiritual filth). Egypt was a place of slavery. And yes, let’s hear it again: we are going from slavery to freedom.

Great.

But what does that mean? We all know that we have something we depend on. Whether it be a scoop of ice cream we must have before the end of the week comes along, or to check our phone after we leave class, or the need to call someone when we are alone, and on and on. The fact that we depend greatly on something or someone else shows our need for it is large. And on a deeper level this shows we are enslaved to this object/product/food/whatever.

The fact that Hashem took us out of Egypt and all the desires that were there shows that Hashem took us out of the slavery that existed there! But then Hashem transferred our dependence on Pharaoh to the dependence on HIM!

Now through prayer, sweat and tears to this spiritual powerforce in the entire universe and beyond we show that we ONLY depend on Hashem. And as shocking as it is, this shows our ultimate freedom. If we G-d forbid get sick we do not depend on doctors (totally) or on medication, we are not enslaved to the machine that shows us our X-Ray, rather we are dependent on Hashem. This Emunah leads us to total serenity which shows our freedom is in our hands, through Hashem’s power.

KOL HASHONEH HALACHOT BECHOL YOM MUVTACH LO SHEH'HOO BEN HA'OLAM HABA

L’yilui Nishamt Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
From Yalkut Yosef:

1. One should have their table set and ready for Lel HaSeder during the day before Pesach (called Erev Pesach) so that the homeowner (Ba’al HaBayit) can come home and go straight to the table to do Kiddush (obviously after Tzet HaKochavim, nightfall). Both men and women are obligated in the Mitzvah of drinking four glasses of Wine (the Four Kosot).

2. Its good to have the children sleep during Erev Pesach (the day of Lel HaSeder) so they can be alert and awake to participate in the Mitzvah of VeHigadeta Lebanecha (telling over the story of Yetitziyat Mitzrayim). A child who understands the story of Yetziyat Mitzrayim (the Exile from Egypt) is obligated to be given by the parent 4 glasses of wine (100% grape juice) and he doesn’t have to drink Revi’yit Wine (81 grams in one shot). It is more important to give children sweets and other treats to be alert throughout the Lel HaSeder.
