CLD #358

For the Refua Shlema of Mordechai Tzvi ben Sara & Binyamin ben Blanka.

SELICHOT BEGIN THE NIGHT OF SEPTEMBER 1st, ARE YOU READY?! Does it make sense that the same week the College Semester begins, the holy holy holy Selichot begin, too? Is Hashem testing us to see what our priorities are?
Jews are like Eggs. Actually, exactly like omelets. We all have this sense of peer pressure that affects who we are and what we do. When one cracks open a couple of eggs to throw on the pan, the color of the eggs changes based on the amount and type of spices mixed in with the omelet.
If you take a teaspoon of black pepper, red pepper, za’atar, mixed chicken grill, and salt with eggs gives you a very dark looking omelet. Now lets take a small community of Jews, throw them in the middle of Kansas with no mikveh, no Bet Knesset, no Jewish School, and no Rabbi; what will be the ultimate influence that pushes the community? The Goyim around them. What will be the end of them?

We are all like Eggs. The question is: which spices do we mix ourselves with to make us who we are?
Is our foundation a Goy foundation which bodily pleasures, clubbing, sports on Sundays, tefillin five days a week instead of six, creating a holiday for Thanksgiving, giving yourself days of vacation from the Torah (Hashem Yerachem) or is our foundation a Jewish foundation, full of Simcha, Kdusha, Torah, Derech of Yirat Shamayim, modesty of our daughters, sisters and mothers that have self respect, a beautiful Shabbat table in each home, Shuls packed early in the morning for Selichot?
Sometimes we just need to take a step back and look at our lives: What have I become: a Jew or a Goy (and sadly today there is no such thing as half and half, its either I’m a Jew or I’m a Goy with a Jewish name)? I do not believe to completely separate ourselves from the Goyim, but we all need to build for ourselves a certain line of separation that shows I am a Jew and here this mixing stops.
Mussar sucks, but it’s the only thing that pushes us to grow. Selichot begins Wednesday night: The Sephardic minhag is to begin Selichot 40 days before Yom Kippur. Will you sleep in or will you show Hashem you care?
