One of my roommates in Yeshivat Shuva Israel under Rabbi
Pinto shlit’a explained to me the meaning of surrendering our wisdom and
knowledge to Hashem through a Mishnah in Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers).
We know that soon, in about two weeks time, we will enter the 49 days of the
Omer which circulate around an individual’s duty of perfecting their
characteristic traits and following the strict guidelines of Pirkei Avot.
In Perek Bet Mishnah Dalet (2:4) Pirkei Avot brings down the
way an individual should live in regard to their willpower. Rabban Gamliel the
son of Rabbi Judah HaNassi would also say: Make
that His (G-d’s) will should be your will, so that He should make your will to
be as His will. Nullify your will before His will, so that He should nullify
the will of others before your will. The Yeshiva Bakhur explained to me the
meaning of this Mishnah like this – Sometimes we get stuck with unexpected
situations in our lives that we cannot run from and we definitely cannot
control. It is simply in G-d’s hands.
What do we need to do? Make it G-d’s will and turn the
situation over to G-d: to literally surrender our power and say: G-d is in
control now, I can do nothing. Therefore, after G-d sees that we overcame our
self pride and self power, He turns the situation to change the will of others
to make sure our wants and needs (our will in reality) will actually result. So
even if it seems like our want will not come true and will not result, in the
end Hashem will make it happen that from ACCEPTING THAT WE DON’T CONTROL THE
SITUATION, in reality we will get what we want!
How exciting is it to hear that Hashem gives us what we want
even when we clearly do not deserve it! Hashem is The Best, we just need to
clean our Jewish lens and give our mind and eyes a car wash to realize Hashem
is running the world and we are simply messengers to get His will across
society.
