For the Average Liberal American: CLD #745

When the Kedusha (purity) of Am Yisrael is on the line for all generations ahead, nothing stands in front of Am Yisrael and we do whatever we can to keep us pure. We see this in the hands of two thirteen year olds, two teenagers, from our week’s exhilarating Parasha, Parashat VaYishlah.

The two brave boys, Shimon and Levi, wipe out an entire city of men three days after the entire city agrees to enter the covenant of Hashem, to do a Berit Milah (circumcision) to join Am Yisrael and become one nation! Not only that, this entire story began with Yaakov in the first place (a short time before this story began). It is written in Rashi and other places that Yaakov had a single moment to have Esav (his brother) do Teshuva (repent) because when Yaakov was returning from Lavan he met Esav, who wanted to kill him. When they physically touched, Yaakov and Esav were both brought to tears and had incredible love for each other. At that moment Yaakov had the chance to bring Dinah, his beautiful daughter, to Esav and have them get married and happily lived ever after.

Yaakov did not and the next Pasuk proves it by stating Esav lifted his eyes to the women… (Bereshit 33:5). Yaakov’s punishment is finding out that his beloved daughter was raped by a non-circumcised teen.

Fast forward a handful of Pesukim (verses) later in the Parasha, the Torah teaches us that Dinah went out of her tent, was raped by Shechem and the entire revenge begins. But what is really revenge and wrong for them to do so or was it really based on Jewish law and justified? The Torah, Rambam and many commentators answer. The Torah first explains that Both Shimon and Levi persuaded the entire nation of Shechem to circumcise themselves, then on the third day (the toughest day after circumcision) Shimon and Levi take advantage of all the men and slaughter them (just like the Syrians are doing to each other and the world remains silent because Arabic Countries are all angels).

The question is why? When the Torah explains that Dinah left her tent and she was raped, at that moment the entire nation of Shechem should have jumped upon Shechem himself and told him to stop, after all the Rambam explains that the Seven Noachide Laws are still valid and applicable to all human beings throughout the world. The moment the ENTIRE NATION refused to REBUKE Shechem, its as if they are obligated , and should receive the punishment of death (for whoever violates one of the Noachide laws receives the death punishment). For this reason Shimon and Levi have the 100% right to justifiably put to death all those at fault of the rape. Now we see that everything works as planned. Also we see after the mass deaths, the Torah explains that it was the entire nation that impurified their sister (and not only Shechem, Bereshit 34:27).

This teaches us that when people who KNOW TORAH AND LIVE IT do things that LOOK WRONG, they should ALWAYS receive kaf zechut (the benefit of the doubt), because in the end of the day only those who really LEARN AND LIVE the Torah know that what they are doing is supported by Jewish Law. [We also do not see Hashem saying anything bad about what Shimon and Levi did]. This also shows us the power of Torah, that even when thousands of men are slaughtered, if it has the support of the Torah it is PROPER and not only what society tells us is really the proper thing to do. Not everything is butterflies and green and bunnies people, be realistic.

Shabbat Shalom.

From Yalkut Yosef:

1. If an individual violated the Shabbat by turning on the light, whether it was on purpose or by accident, another Jew cannot benefit from this light whatsoever because turning on electricity on Shabbat is a definite Torah prohibiton. In any case, one does not need to leave their home in this situation, rather one should be cautious not to read using the electric light that was turned on ‘illegally’ and also one should avoid doing any activity that involves the need of this light.

2. An object that was placed in a dark room and on Shabbat one violated the Shabbat by turning on the light to bring out this object, it turns out that one can use the object based on the essence of Halacha. However, one should be stringent upon him/herself not to use this object on Shabbat.

CLD #744

How do we become like our forefather, Yaakov Avinu? First of all, we must know that Yaakov is considered Ish Emet, The Man of Truth. The Orhot Tzadikkim has an entire chapter devoted to the characteristic of Emet (truth) and explains one who is honest leads a life of success. He specifically explains that an individual who follows the Emet, like Yaakov did, and is honest in his/her HEART and does not want to even think lies, all his/her sayings are established and erected.

This shows us the power of truth, that if an individual learns Torah and reaches the core of truth, or the core of Torah, they can successfully live a life of Mitzvot and the correct path. We know today people who claim to be religious might even go in an awfully mistaken path and think they are perfect Jews following the Shulhan Aruch (Jewish Code of Law)!

The answer is to be completely devoted to truth. But how do we do that? We need to be like Yaakov. If we split up the name Yaakov into two we have: Yud-Ayin, Kuf, Bet. This forms the letter Yud (with a numerical value, gematriya, of ten) and the word Ekev, which means heal.

There are two pesukim in our Tanach that relate directly to these two parts of the body. As we know from Shiruim (Torah classes), the letter Yud in Kabbalah represents wisdom and wisdom is located in the brain (in the central and highest part of the body). We also know from Hebrew that the word Ekev, or heel, refers to the lowest part of the body. In Tehillim (111:9) David HaMelech graciously writes: Reshit Hohma Yirat Hashem… The zenith of wisdom is Fear of Heaven. In Mishlei (22:4), David’s son Shelomo describes:  Ekev Anava Yirat Hashem...On the heel of modesty comes Fear of Heaven.

As Rashi states in Parashat Ekev, we know that the heel represents our lack of stringency on where we let our legs take us. We sometimes find ourselves in places we should not be in and just ignore the grip the Yetzer Hara has on us but we must understand once we reach this grip and control our own actions, we can easily reach Yirat Shamayim (Fear of Heaven). This is the greatness of Yaakov, he had the power and emunah (faith) to know that with much effort he can have Fear of Heaven completely take control over him from heel to brain to do the service of Hashem.

Shabbat Shalom! [Why not begin with Shabbat?]

From Yalkut Yosef:

1. Women are accustomed to avoid doing types of activities that involve work such as knitting and weaving during the time that the Hannukah candles are lit in the home, during the thirty minutes that they are lit. The reason is because we show that we cannot gain any benefit from the light emitted by the Hannukah candles and there is no place to be lenient in this matter except for baking, cooking and using the light for home needs.

2. There are women who are accustomed to avoid any type of activities that involve work altogether throughout the entire eight days of Hannukah and they should ban this custom altogether. The absence of activity leads to boredom. In any case there are those who say women should abstain from doing heavy duty activity such as laundry (in the old days) and other things that caused a lot of work during the first and eight (and final) days of Hannukah only. However, men do not abstain from any work whatsoever.

CLD #743

People in our generation LOVE to throw around the words “Hillul Hashem”  like they get paid for it. But do we even know what Hillul Hashem is, or desecrating the name of God? The sefer (book) Orhot Tzadikkim explains in detail the concept of Hillul Hahsem in Sha’ar Teshuva (the chapter on repentance). Hillul Hashem is a very big sin, but what is it?

He explains as follows by bringing a few examples that leads to an action that is similar in all of them. The first example he brings is an individual who goes to a butcher and is not stringent about paying the butcher at the same moment (gives him an “I.O.U.”) and brings himself to a suspicious act of doubt in whether he stole the meat or not. Another example he brings is of a single individual who walks around in the public domain six feet without wearing tefillin (as they used to wear tefillin throughout the entire daytime) and not learning to himself halacha (Jewish law) he knows by heart or Torah in general.

Another example of Hillul Hashem in the name of The Bet Midrash of Rabbi Ami is if upon reciting this individuals name, people are embarrassed to be known as friends with him. All these individuals and their stories lead to examples that have a single similarity. These examples show us cases where people are underestimating and belittling Mitzvot and Torah. When an individual gives an I.O.U. he/she is not thinking about the Mitzvah of avoiding theft. When an individual walks around without Torah he is not thinking about the stringency of not learning Torah and going about life without spirituality.

We need to understand that we must always think about how our actions influence others. When I walk outside without a kippa and show other Jewish men that I am not worrying about my Fear of Heaven, I am actually causing them to not worry about Hashem. When I walk outside in pants and show other Jewish women that I am not worrying about men staring at my legs or my tight pants then I cause other women to have a bigger desire to take off their skirts. Are these small examples of Hillul Hashem? What about going clubbing, what about watching pornography and showing it off to your friends? What about telling your friends at work you are saving $30,000 annually by NOT sending your child to a Jewish education?

KOL HASHONEH HALACHOT BECHOL YOM MUVTACH LO SHEH'HOO BEN HA'OLAM HABA

Translated from Yalkut Yosef Online (Yalkut.Info):

1. Each individual should have the proper intention when answering “amen” during Kaddish out loud and put effort to run after Kaddish to answer because all who answer Kaddish with all their strength have their life’s negative judgments ripped. When one answers out loud its to help with the intention of the words and not to literally use all their strength and try to say the words the loudest (and have people become disgusted by his amen), rather it should be said out loud with all the intention one can provide. The meaning of “amen yehe shemeh rabbah” is that Hashem’s name should be “complete,” because Hashem swore that His name will not be “complete” until the nation of Amalek will be erased from this world.

2. One who hears Kaddish in a live broadcast over the radio may answer “amen” after the one saying Kaddish. Also one who hears Selihot (in the time of Elul-Aseret Yemei Teshuvah) and the 13 Middot may answer as well in a live broadcast. But one who hears the Megillah (3 months away) in a live broadcast does not fulfill his Mitzvah, even if he answers amen after the berachot (blessings).

CLD #742

The Gemara (Talmud) in the Masechet (Tractate) of Moed Kattan describes the laws of Hol Ha’Moed, or the days between the first and last days of Pesah and Sukkot (Yom Tov). On these days there are certain activities one must refrain from doing due to the severity of keeping the days of the holiday different from regular weekdays, since some activities are allowed and some are forbidden. The first page of the Gemara, Moed Kattan 2a, discusses this law with an example of two different fields and if one is allowed to water these fields during Hol Ha’Moed.

The first field that we later learn is permissible to water on Hol Ha’Moed is called Bet HaShelahin and is a field with sits on a mountain (which is slanted). This type of field, as Rashi explains, always needs to be watered because of its location. Also from the Torah and its aramaic translation (written by Onkelus the Convert), the name of this field has a direct connection with the word ‘dry.’ This teaches us that if an individual places him/herself on a mountain, or in a high location compared to everyone else, he/she constantly needs to be watered with spirituality (as Torah is compared to water) because the Torah does not stick to individuals who lack modesty.

The second field that we later learn is forbidden to water on Hol Ha’Moed is called Bet Ha’Baal and the Torah and its aramiac translation teaches us it has a settled connotation to it. This type of field is not like the previous one, rather this field sits in the valley and does not need to be watered constantly. This teaches us the important characteristic trait of modesty. If an individual always places him/herself downwards in regards to pride, they will be watered with spirituality and the Torah WILL stick to them. They will also be surrounded by great fruits of their actions and positive situations. They are settled with themselves, can succeed, receive rebuke AND GROW.

Be’ezrat Hashem we should realize that living with modesty is a key ingredient in living a Jewish life.

KOL HASHONEH HALACHOT BECHOL YOM MUVTACH LO SHEHOO BEN HAOLAM HABA

Translated from Yalkut Yosef:

1. During the Second Beit HaMikdash (500 BCE) the Roman Empire decreed heavy laws against Jewish practices and tried to eradicate religion from the lives of the Jews (meaning did not allow for any Torah learning or Mitzvot-related deeds/events). The Romans put a ton of pressure on our ancestors, took their money and daughters/wives and went in to our Beit HaMikdash and defaced the Kodash HaKodashim by making the holiest room in the world impure. There was so much suffering and pain throughout the Jewish nation that Hashem had mercy on us and saved us by giving power to the Hashmonaim. This victory (that prevailed for more than 200 years under Jewish law and kingship) continued with the famous Chanukah Miracle. Because of this Miracle that began on 25 Kislev (in 19 days), the Rabbanim stated that these 8 days should be days of Hallel and Simcha! Therefore we light candles every night to celebrate and publicize the Miracle of Chanukah.

2. It is recommended and correct to learn the Halchot (laws) of Chanukah during the holiday of Chanukah itself in order to know the details of the Halachot. [Therefore we will begin posting only Chanukah Halachot until the end of the Chag].

CLD #741

Have you ever been in a simha (Jewish celebration) where you see a woman stretch down her skirt because its too short once she sees a Rabbi walk into the ballroom or stretch upwards her dress to cover her neck (we hope that is the only thing up there that is uncovered). And how much more so about certain specific stories about ourselves when we see someone respectable approaching us and we make sure we look representable. We are embarrassed of others because we actually see them.

We do not see Hashem, so therefore we can do whatever we want and after 120 use the excuse: but Hashem, I never saw you, you were never there to put me in line to make sure I do everything the right way. This might be the strongest argument for those who are not in the way of the Torah and Mitzvot. In reality, this is the weakest argument one could propose. The truth is we choose not to see Hashem.

One of the most powerful ways we become confused and blind ourselves from the sight of Hashem is by making our eyes look at other impure things.  What does that mean? Our eyes are channels with which we can use to see the world as a pure or impure place because all our five sense are given to us in order to choose between good and the opposite. When an individual uses these sense for impurity they cancel the sense’s ability to differentiate between good and the opposite. Therefore after a man stares with the wrong intention at certain parts of a woman’s body they literally weaken the eyes from seeing through pure lens. When one refrains from impurity then they can SEE Hashem, they can Feel Hashem, they can Touch, taste and hear Hashem everywhere they go and real Yirat Shamayim is accomplished.

The question stills stands though: why take this extra duty upon myself to purify my eyes, my hands, my tongue, my ears etc? Why not just be young, be free, relax, chill out and wait until I start dating for marriage or get older to become religious?! The answer is explained through a parable. Imagine a professional basketball player beginning to practice to enter the NBA after they get their college degree. They start practicing at 22-23 and it takes about five years to get to their zenith at sport. After this they need to get a good agent and publicize themselves. Every single individual will get confused and give them rebuke as to why they started so late!

The lesson learned is simple. The time to start keeping Torah and Mitzvot is NOW because if you don’t start now you will not have the time to begin (Pirkei Avot).  Be’ezrat Hashem we will understand that we DO HAVE the strength to do Teshuva and be serious Jews (all Jews are good) and all the excuses are just dust-in-the-air thoughts to lessen our potential.

Translated from Yalkut Yosef Online (Yalkut.Info):

1. If A has no witnesses to prove B stole money from him/her and B leaves an object by A’s home that has close to the same value of the object, A can hold the object until B returns the money or sell the object and keep the money to him/herself. This stands only when it is known that B (the thief) is a violent and aggressive individual and there is no chance that A will have the opportunity to take B to court or deal with an aggressive individual like this.

2. In this time, our Courts (Rabbinical) judge on matters of loans, the marriage contracts (ketubot), inheritance and harming one’s money because this includes a loss of money. However, in regards to judging a case about actual damage to an individual, our Rabbinical judges do not have the tools (do not have semicha) to judge all the major cases within each situation. The Rabbincial Court can only judge on the medical bills and the opportunity cost caused from the suffering one causes another, and not the actual damage, suffering or embarrassment caused from the situation.

CLD #740

Here at theCLD we look at everything and try to pick up the little messages Hashem is trying to constantly send us to live life WITH Him so we really do have a spiritual time in this world. Today I was staring at a bag of tea for two minutes. It was fascinating, it was like watching two worlds collide so smoothly and efficiently. It looked like there was ink being spilled into the crystal clear waters of the jug, but in reality it was just the power of hot water with herbs and spices.

When a Jew realizes he/she is an actual vessel for Hashem’s presence in our world, they look at their goals and accomplishments differently. Judaism is about letting ourselves become the best vessels for God to place His Divine Presence in. We ultimately want to become the location for Hashem to channel His spirituality and purity into the world. The same thing happens when we place a tea bag in hot water. A tea bag WILL diffuse into cold water, but the process will take much much longer than hot water. We must understand that each and everyone of us have potential to fill this world up with goodness rooted from the Torah.

Only when the water in the jug is heated the tea bag will really sink and diffuse into the water. Each and everyone of us is like a jug of water. Each and everyone of us has the opportunity to heat ourselves up with the power of the Torah by following the Mitzvot and learning the holy Torah and then we actually feel Hashem in our flesh and blood  diffusing His purity into us. The only way we become hot enough for Hashem to do it quickly is through living life based on the Shulhan Aruch, (aka the summary of the Oral Torah), the Jewish Code of Law.

Hannukah is coming up. Hannukah represents LIGHT. Light also originates from fire. The Hannukah candles is another approach of reaching this spiritual heat to light up our hearts to serve God.

From Yalkut Yosef:

1. Our Hachamim (Sages) taught us in Nedarim 22b “All who vow, even though they fulfill them, are called wicked, as it says in the Torah (Devarim 23:23) But if you shall refrain from making vows, you will have no sins.” When one delays paying his vows, the Heavens open up his book of life and critically watch his actions. One should be stringent to nullify his/her vows. In any case, when one vows to give Tzedakah (charity) it is a Mitzvah to fulfill it and one should refrain from nullifying donation vows.  In any case, it is still not the best alternative to vow to give Tzedakah and when one is in public promising to give Tzedakah for a community fundraising, they should say beli neder.

2. One who swears/vows in writing has no obligation to fulfill the written vow because a vow is not considered valid until it is spoken (Maschet Shevuot 26b). This is also the opinion of Maran Shulhan Aruch and other Halacha poskim. How much more so when one writes the vow down for another and only has the other sign it off, there is no such vow here.

Yaakov and Unity: A Guest Writer Special

Yaakov left Be'er Sheva and started going towards Haran. On the way he stopped at a "makom" and the Midrash says it was Yerushalayim (Har Hamoria).
The Pasuk says "Vaikach Me'avnei Hamakom Vayasem Lerashotav." The Midrash Raba Siman 11 says that Yaakov took 12 stones and each stone said "the tzadik should rest his head on me," so Hashem then connected all 12 stones into one big stone.

Each stone represent a Shevet (tribe) from Am Israel and Yaakov (the Tzadik) represents the Torah. From here we can learn that when Am Yisrael follows the way of Hashem together then Hashem makes us one.

We saw that also in Maamad Har Sinai, "Vayichan Sham Ha'am Tachat Hahar:" Hazal say "keish echad belev echad" meaning all of Am Israel were together with one heart, and then they were ready to accept the Torah.

Once that happens, we will be Zoche to see the dream of Yaakov, "sulam mutzav artza ve rosho hashamaima umalachim olim veyordim", that explains the angels who went up and down the Sulam (ladder). On a rational level it should be the opposite where the angels should go "down (from the Heavens) and up (back)?" This is explained through the Hagim and the arrival of millions of Jews at the Bet Hamikdash to bring sacrifices to Hashem. During these beautiful occasions and celebrations, many angels would be created and go up to shamayim (the Heavens) from the power of their Mitzvot and Berachot (blessings). That's another explanation of the dream of Yaakov but that can only take place when we are united!

Especially in our days we should be mitchazek (strengthening ourselves) in Ahavat Hinam (brotherly love), "Et Tzara he leYaakov umimena yivashea." With every suffering Hashem is the One who redeems us.

Shavua Tov Umevorach and bH only besorot tovot (happy occasion).

CLD #739

Baruch Hashem I had the zechut (privelige) to hear an unbelievable Devar Torah in Seuda Shelishit. It is simple and basic and probably clear to all Jews who think on a  Jewish level, HOWEVER, unfortunately due to the lack of sensitivity to life that occurs in our spiritually dark generation we tend to forget these key principles. The Rabbi who gave the inspiring speech explains that the Beracha of Birkat Kohanim breaks down all the shefa (spiritual energy and blessing) of the world into three channels.

The first two channels are completel opposites but are directly linked. The first Pasuk of Birkat Kohanim is Yevarchecha Hashem VeYishmerecha, Blessed are you by Hashem and He will watch over you. This first Pasuk of Birkat Kohanim speaks about the physical, financial success in one’s life and the Beracha includes not only the actual financial success BUT ALSO the actual protection and guaranteed watch over this success. Meaning, when one pays attention to the first Beracha of Birkat Kohanim they see that Hashem says He will watch over and keep this financial success, your money WILL stay in your pocket!

However, when we look at the next Pasuk: Ya’er Hashem Panav Elecha Vichuneka, May Hashem light up His face onto you and educate you, we see that there is no such promise or guarantee of keeping this ”light.” This second Pasuk speaks about the blessing of Spirituality, that one should rise up in spirituality and become close to Hashem and feel his/her soul glue to Hashem and receive all the positive and miraculous feeling of closeness from Hashem. However, WE DON’T SEE HASHEM PROMISING ANY “SECURITY” over this blessing!

This teaches us that following the life of spirituality is NOT EASY. However, because Hashem leaves it up to us to be stringent about staying spiritual, we know the reward of being close to Hashem after toiling into the work and service of Hashem is felt and appreciated much more. Meaning, when one wants to be spiritual THEY MUST WORK FOR IT CONSTANTLY. Being Jewish is continuous work that is NOT promised to us from inheritance or any prophecy.

It is true that one who enters the direction of spirituality and TAKES IT UPON HIM/HERSELF TO BE PURE then Hashem DOES HELP! However, we clearly see there is no guarantee that it will stick. Be’ezrat Hashem we should have a shavua (week) of success in overcoming all our obstacles of spirituality this week and see the light of Hashem promised in Birkat Kohanim by continuously working on our Service of Hashem.

Never give up.

Translated from Yalkut Yosef:

1. Once entering a Bet Kenesset (Shul), one should be cautious to enter with fear and respect as if walking into a King’s palace, and avoid running into the Bet Kenesset with speed.

2. If one has no choice but to pray at home (because praying in Shul is the best option), they should still appoint a specific place to pray in their home. Women should also appoint for themselves a permanent place in the house to pray their daily and not pray in one place one day and in another a different day.
