CLD #819

Due to the concept of this Jewish month of Adar which states in the Gemara: When Adar arrives we increase in joy, one needs to glue in his/her mind some details regarding the Yetzer Hara (Evil Inclination). The Yetzer Hara is a powerful angel that controls the amount of spiritual obstacles ‘he’ will put in front of a Jew to bring the Jew to a situation to choose between good and the opposite. The Yetzer Hara in the meantime WANTS the Jew to choose GOOD! In any case he was created by Hashem to push every Jew to reject the desirable claims and to choose in a decision that will lead to a more spiritual reality.

Why is this so important for the month we are in? Because this month we DO NEED TO INCREASE IN JOY but we also need to do it wisely. With everything in the spiritual realm that has a very positive effect has also with it permission from Hashem to let the Yetzer Hara enter the scene to mess everything up. Meaning, just like an individual who has an open highway with no cars, only in that moment all of a sudden it will start raining hard to ruin the “opportunity” to speed. Something must go wrong.

Where can we see an example of when the Yetzer Hara enters a situation. Let’s take an individual who is currently in a Jewish Studies Program (Yeshiva) and has the opportunity to either go out to watch a movie or continue learning Torah. The Mishnah in Pirkei Avot (Ethics of the Fathers 1:8) teaches if an individual has to judge a defendant and a plaintiff in court, this judge MUST see both these people as complete wicked individuals BEFORE THE VERDICT. Why? Because this way the judge has no interest in either and can reach justice. What is this similar to? Our case with the Torah Scholar and the movies.

Before deciding what to do (obviously the Yetzer Hara will make “going to the movies” like the BIGGEST DEAL) he should look at both options as horrible alternatives for spending his time. This way he can come to judge both on the same level and in the end of the day reach ‘justice’ for his life.

One can also add that an individual can simply take upon himself the importance of applying a Rabbi to his life so the yetzer hara will not drive him crazy and he can have the strength to choose a positive direction (guided by a Rabbi with experience and a great amount of Torah learning).
