Here
is a story from Ve’En Lamo Michshol about the power behind doing
kindness with others (Gemilut Hassadim). People often think that you
need to be around an individual who is dressed like a gentlemen and LOOKS like
a mannered individual in order get influenced for the better. Sometimes it’s
the simplest and most modest person that gets you shocked about how much
they do for others!
There
was once a pious and righteous Jew. He used to pray and fast for days at a time
to ask Hashem to hint to him who will he be next to by Olam Haba (the
world to come, which will show him his righteous status). Hashem hinted to him
in the dream: “you see the butcher in your town, he will be your neighbor in
Olam Haba.” The righteous man was so upset! A Butcher! Cutting meat all day and
so far away from Mitzvot! The man did not accept this hint in the dream and
fasted again. A few days later they hinted to him the same thing. He began to
cry as he awoke.
He
heard a voice from Shamayim [the Heavens]: How dare you be upset with this
news! If you weren’t a righteous Jew you should be put to death, this butcher
is a pious individual with great deeds! The man decided to speak to the butcher
and find out what he did that was so great indeed.
When
he visited the butcher shop, the man pleaded for the individual to remember what
deeds he did in order to explain to him what privilege he had to be neighbors
in Olam Haba together! The butcher told him the story: One time a group of
non-Jews came to our town with these prisoners. There was a young girl crying
hysterically about the fact that she was Jewish and she was a prisoner
suffering. The butcher decided to take out his wallet and pay huge sums of
money to ‘buy’ her freedom. After many years he supported her and she grew up
in the butcher’s home. At the age of her fruitful years she was ready to wed. The
butcher asked his son if he wanted to marry this girl.
After
a few months of preparation the wedding began and everything was top notch.
During the feast all the tables were involved in their delicious five star
meals. One table did not eat and the butcher (the host) was lost in confusion.
Why aren’t they eating? They found out that one of the poor people sitting down
was hysterically crying. The butcher asked; “what’s wrong with you?!” The poor
person explained to him that many years ago he asked the bride for marriage and
she accepted before she was taken prisoner and now he found her about to get
married to another man. The butcher asked the son to give up his spot at the
Huppah and hand it over to the poor man (now the new groom). The butcher made
sure that the newlyweds have enough funding to reach their old town and start a
new home.
After
hearing this great story the righteous man (with the dreams from the beginning)
was delighted he has such a privilege to be neighbors with this butcher in Olam
Haba. Sometimes its not the looks that count, but its truly the deeds we do! You can help as well with contributing to the current CLD Fundraising project and help fund a bride-in-need's wedding. Since the launch of the campain (the wedding is in 6 weeks) we haven't received a single donation.
