CLD #759

Rav Sasson Paniri, in his book Kol Sasson that speaks about the Jewish holidays, explains in the name of Rav Aharon Kutler ZY’A that Hannukah is not about survival of the Tzadikkim (the righteous ones) and it is not even about the survival of the Jewish people! So what is it all about?

Here we are enjoying the spiritual light of the Festival of Lights on the 8th and final night of Hannukah 5773. We understand that the world is in a very sensitive spot where everything and everyone is always expecting an abnormal event to happen. The riots around the world, the mass shootings, the wars, Israel’s enemies, the nuclear power plants and on and on we live through our day like everything is okay. And maybe it is, but we must bring Hashem more into our life.

What have we taken from Hannukah? Maybe a couple pounds of weight by eating many Sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts) or maybe a burnt finger or two by lighting candles or even a slight change in our attitude but have we really taken in the essence of Hannukah? Rav Sasson Paniri continues to explain in the name of Rav Kutler that Hannukah is about spiritual light.

Hashem saved us from the terrible decrees of the Greeks (which were out to kill any Jew who circumcised their son and any Jew found keeping Shabbat) because He wanted the Torah to survive. When Rabbis say Torah they mean the Oral Torah as well, because one does not go without the other like milk and cereal! Therefore we must understand that yes, Hashem does care about the Jewish people, but the center of the world and the reason for creation was for the Jewish people to LIVE the Torah’s words. Without learning how can we expect to follow Hashem’s way?

And don’t say you cannot because Hashem placed in this world all the commandments because it IS POSSIBLE to fulfill them! Hashem has enough wisdom (and eternal wisdom) to command us something that we can accomplish. Its only up to us to choose it.

SHAVUA TOV and HANNUKAH SAMEAH!
