In Masechet Shabbat the Gemara discusses the laws of lighting Hannukah candles. On Daf 23 Amud Bet (23b) Rashi brings down the Pasuk we brought in yesterday’s CLD, Ner Mitzvah VeTorah Or (Mishlei 6:23) because it relates to Hannukah! The Gemara says in the name of Rav Hunnah that an individual who is consistent with ‘candles’ has the zechut (privilege) of raising Talmidei Hachamim (Torah scholars). Mepharshim, commentators including Rashi on the Gemara, explain that this ‘candle’ discussed here is Shabbat candles and Hannukah candles!
What does Rashi say in regards to the awesome Pasuk written
by Shelomo HaMelech brought down in yesterday’s CLD? Rashi says that with the
lighting of Shabbat and the candles of Hannukah LIGHT COMES INTO THE WORLD!
This is the reason why one who is consistent with lighting Shabbat and Hannukah
candles is zoche (privileged) to raise his sons as Torah Scholars.
How does this make sense? What does one have to do with the
other?! Maybe we can understand this Pasuk and this Rashi like this: there is
another Pasuk in Tanach that states Ner Hashem Nishmat Adam (also
written in Misheli 20:6), meaning Man’s
Soul is G-d’s Candle. When the Neshama (soul) of a Jew is lit with the
following of Mitzvot and the living of Torah, then that person lights up the world.
When a Talmid Hacham (Scholar of Torah) is raised, they light up everything and
everyone around them. Since the father made sure the home is consistently
surrounded and filled with physical light that represents Mitzvot, or simply
the candles of Hannukah and Shabbat, Hashem ‘pays’ back the family with the
integration of a Torah education implanted in the child’s mind!
This teaches us that when an individual works and revolves
his/her life to Hashem with truth behind it and for the correct reasons, Hashem
pays them back!
Hannukah
Sameah!
