CLD #755

When one lights a candle, the light emitting off the candle shines through the entire room, no matter how dark it is. Mishlei, written by Shlomo HaMelech (the smartest person who ever lived), has a part of a pasuk (verse) in it that is invigorating “Ner Hashem Nishmat Adam.” The candle of Hashem is the Neshama (soul) of man.

When a person, which is Hashem’s candle, is lit by the power and energy that the Torah holds inside it, he/she can shine up the entire world. It is known that Hannukah is in the shortest time of the year. The daytime during this week exactly is the shortest throughout the whole year (proof with Shabbat times, this past Shabbat we lit Shabbat candles earliest). Therefore, when we light the Hannukah candles, we specifically light them during the time of the year when darkness conquers! We want to prove to the world that the Torah lights up everything and turns the most depressing and awful life event into a celebration of light and optimism!

When an individual takes upon him/herself to accomplish a Mitzvah, whether it be to begin saying Berachot (blessings, which are the direct connection linkers with G-d today) or even practicing to be more modest (such as taking upon oneself to stop cursing), they literally light up the candle that they represent to greaten the name of Hashem. When an individual lights him/herself up with Mitzvot, they cause others to enjoy from that light and influence others to do good. When there is light, one sees the direction they are walking in. When someone learns Torah and follows its way, they see the world in a clear light.

Be’ezrat Hashem this Hannukah we should take upon ourselves even the tiniest Mitzvah because getting closer to Hashem is a lifetime step by step process. Growth occurs when we think.

Hannukah Sameah!
