Baruch Hashem I heard an inspiring Shiur (Torah Class) from
Rabbi Eli Mansour shlit”a from the week of Aseret Yemei Teshuva (the ten days
from Rosh HaShanah until Yom Kippur). Rabbi Mansour explained the concept of
doing Teshuva because during that time of year we usually inspect our actions
and review our past months/year.
In the middle of his speech, Rav Mansour explained that
Teshuva (repentance) is above nature. We must understand that there is a
physical world in which non-Jews live and function by and then there is the
world that the Jewish nation struggles through, the world of spirituality that
is unknown to those ignorant of spirituality. When a Jew realizes the love that
Hashem has from him/her, only then can they enter into this spiritually
awakening world. When one sees that this love is eternal and beyond the
boundaries of nature and the physical world with which we live in, only then
can they really glimpse into the reality of Teshuva and its enormous influence.
Orhot Tzadikkim (the worldwife famous Mussar book) explains
in Sha’ar Teshuva (the chapter on Repentance) that Teshuva is the refua shelema (medicine, recovery) for
sin. Meaning when one gets to the point of realizing the love that Hashem has
for him/her, only then can they really feel the sadness and bitterness of their
action that went against God. It is like a husband and a wife where one cheats
on the other. Why does one cheat on the other? Because they do not receive
notification of any form of love. There is no communication, no love, no
goodness SEEN BETWEEN THEM.
When we sin, we are stating that Hashem does not have love
for us and therefore we justify our actions by thinking deep inside: He doesn’t love me, so why should I overcome
my tough desires for Him?! When we implode into ourselves the fact and
REALITY of Hashem’s love for each and everyone of us, NO MATTER OUR SPIRITUAL
LEVEL, then we can successfully do Teshuva. And on a higher level: when we
understand that doing Teshuva is for OUR
own good and not ‘to do Hashem a favor’ then we can do Teshuva with our
heart, or the highest form of Teshuva. Teshuva is something that is 24/7 and
comes from the spark of eternal Judaism we all have inside of us.
Be’ezrat Hashem we
should realize that Teshuva ALWAYS WORKS, no matter how intense it was or what
level of spirituality we are on.
Judaism=Think.
Never give up.
