Rav Neventzhal, the Chief Rabbi of the Old City in Jerusalem wrote this in the Yeshivat Netiv Aryeh weekly newsletter regarding the Parasha:
In addition to the search for the sign of a ba'alas chesed (woman of kindess), Eliezer does something else which even had he been directed to do so by Avraham had to come from his own heart - he prayed. He prayed to Hashem to send him the appropriate woman for Yitzchak Avinu. Prayer must come from the heart and not simply in response to a command. Eliezer poured his heart out and Hashem answered his prayer before he was even finished. In fact Eliezer prayed for something which was against his interests. Eliezer was hoping for his own daughter to marry Yitzchak, when he mentioned the idea to Avraham, Avraham responded that Eliezer's daughter was not a suitable match for Yitzchak - she was not good enough. Despite this, as a loyal servant, he sincerely prayed to be able to find a suitable wife for Yitzchak.
We see endless amount of wisdom and pure simha (happiness) behind real love of Torah only from these few beautiful lines of the Devar Torah. We learn from Eliezer, the servant of our Forefather Avraham, that one needs to pray for the appropriate woman who will make the individual's life a life filled with Fear of Heaven and a push for the right direction in serving Hashem.
We also learn from these lines of wisdom the amount of loyalty a servant needs to obtain for his master. Eliezer wanted his own daughter to marry Yitzhak, but NO WAY! Avraham directly tells him No, even if we learn from the pesukim (verses) in the Torah that Eliezer was basically the right hand man of Avraham, being a huge Torah Scholar. Eliezer still accepts with the utmost modesty and continues in his search for Yitzhak's wife. We know Hashem is our master, but do we really know that? Do we live it? I know I don't! It is the toughest type of service in the entire world. It is tougher than all the service the big 4 accounting companies do for their largest clients. It is tougher than all the service ConEdison provided for the millions without power in the tri-state area and it is certainly tougher to live with Hashem and follow in the Torah's way more than an actual servant and his master in this world.
Then the question comes up: why do we continue in trying to please Hashem and service Him if its so hard? What's the point, I am going to fail anyway. This type of thinking is the actual Yetzer Hara (evil Inclination) itself. It is the number one thought that this angel wants us to think: we can't do it. But we know from the Talmud that the spice that calms this evil inclination is the Torah. Hashem also tells us through our Hachamim in the Talmud and through the Torah that we should never give up, after all, Eliezer prayed and as we see today he found the perfect shidduch for Yitzhak. Tefillah (prayer) is beyond the limits of the world and even if the limits of the world show us a result of x, we know that Hashem can change that in a single moment. So never give up!
B'H we should understand that praying for a shidduch means asking Hashem for the appropraite spouse for me, and NOT the individual I am currently dating or asking for a specific girl. Only Hashem knows who is best for me. So smile.
Shabbat Shalom!
