Translated from Rav Ovadia’s Halacha Emails:
1. One should avoid washing dishes that are not needed for
the Shabbat in general (including meals, snacks, etc.) on Shabbat itself. The
root of this law is the prohibition of preparing something for the weekday on
Shabbat itself because one should not put effort into preparing for something
that is not for Shabbat on the holy day of Shabbat. However, if one has a doubt whether or not he/she will use
certain dishes/cups on Shabbat can still go ahead and wash them because there
is still a chance that they will use those dishes again on Shabbat (and that
means they are putting effort in preparing something for Shabbat on Shabbat and
not for the weekday).
2. There is an exception to this rule in regards to having a
doubt whether or not one will use certain type of dishes on Shabbat again and
if he/she is allowed to wash them in this case. When it comes to cups for
beverages one may wash the no matter what on Shabbat because there is no set
time for using these cups. However, when it comes to pots and pans that are for
cooking, one may not wash them on Shabbat because there will not be a need to
use them again. The prohibition stands for all dishes that need to be cleaned
in the time of sunset on Motzei Shabbat (when Shabbat comes out), which is
definitely forbidden.
Shabbat Shalom!
