Election Day 2012. What a day that really marks the next four years of America’s existence and power in the world. No wonder why every voting location has long lines with people eager to stand at that voting booth and fill in those bubbles.
Stop. Why do people bother voting if they know the
state they are voting in is definitely going to result in one way. For example,
it is known that California and New York are Democratic and Georgia is
Republican for decades! Why does someone with a republican view bother to go to
the voting booth in New York? Why does someone with a democratic view bother to
stand on a line in any one of Georgia’s voting locations? One of the answers is
that people want to feel that they are actually making a difference and
influencing the outcome of the public. Another answer is that people are
stubborn and put a lot of effort into becoming part of a larger successful
group.
What can we take from the elections to help our relationship
with Hashem, the REAL PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD? First, we need to be stubborn for
Mitzvot. It is true we should always behave in an appropriate and respectful
manner, but when we do Mitzvot we must be stubborn about them. For example, we
have specific times to pray everyday, where men are obligated to pray three
time a day with a minyan (a number of
10 people). If we have an event that clashes with the minyan times we should be stubborn about going to minyan and find another one around our
location at a different time.
Another thing we can learn from the voting, especially in
states were it is usually a single-sided state is that we do make a different
with Mitzvot. We must understand what the Gemara (Talmud) says is 100% true: Kol Yisrael Arevim Ze LaZe, all of
Israel are interconnected, what I do affects your life and what you do affects
my life for the good and the opposite. We are influencing the outcome of the
public and the whole world around us, as David HaMelech and the Navi show us
that after three years of drought in David HaMelech’s time that affected the
entire nation he figured out that only from his wrongdoing ALONE that this drought
came about!
B’H we should realize that this election only happens once
in four years, but for ‘electing’ Hashem as our President we must know that we
do it everyday. Who is my leader, my role model? If Hashem is really our
leader, our King, our President we strive to be like Him and get close to Him!
Let’s all take a moment and just meditate for a second and pray: “Hashem, help
me fill in the blank, Help me get closer to you, Help me
be a REAL Jew in my HEART and in my Doings!”
