For the Ilui
Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel For the Refua Shlema of Yaakov Hai
ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:
1. The days between Yom Tov (which ended last night) and the
Seventh Day of Sukkot (Sunday night) are called Hol HaMo’ed, and these days are stated as ‘holy’ by the Torah.
Everyone is prohibited in doing melacha
(craft/work/labor). It is also appropriate to respect these days with wearing
dressy clothing and being in simha
(happiness) by eating meat and drinking wine. One should by his wife modest
clothing and jewelry and his children with candy. Lechathila (the best way) one should eat bread in their meals
during Hol HaMo’ed.
2. It is a Mitzvah to greaten one’s Torah learning during
Hol HaMo’ed because pikudei Hashem
mesamhei lev, “The orders of Hashem are upright, causing the heart to
rejoice” (Tehillim 19:9). When one learns Torah they are fulfilling the Mitzvah
of being happy for Sukkot. These days are prohibited in labor just because one
cannot act like other days of the year, yemei
hol, where there is no kedusha (holiness) in them whatsoever.
