For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L & Yissachar ben Yona Z’L.
One of the Mitzvot which we were commanded to fulfill especially during this time, during the
Holiday of Sukkot, is the Mitzvah of Simhat HaChag, the Happiness of Sukkot. The
Gaon Rabbenu Rav Ovadia Yosf shlit’a has an entire email dedicate to this
special Mitzvah that is tuned in Sukkot. In reality, we are commanded to be in
Simha all the time because we are the sons and daughters of The King of the
world, Hashem, but what makes Sukkot so special that its entire theme is
Happiness, simha?
If there is a mighty ruler in the world that has the best
military, unlimited funding, the largest population in the best geographic
region for battles and wars, everyone would want to be under that rule. Everyone
would want to be a part of the success, a part of the conquering journey.
Everyone wants to succeed.
This reality and fact of success is directly connected to
the simha behind being a Jew. On
Sukkot we are literally commanded to fulfill happiness on the most physical
level, forget spirituality for a moment. We need to eat meat and drink wine,
buy modest clothing and jewelry for our wives and buy sweets and delicious
treats for children. But the the most meaningful and superior type of happiness
is the happiness by our spiritual state.
We are the children of The King of the world, we are the
soldiers of the most powerful general, the most persuasive politician and
definitely the most affluent aristocrat in the history of mankind and the
universe. Let that sink in for a moment. Now add to the fact that the Torah was
given to us as a gift, and Shabbat was given to us as a treasure only to us out
of the entire world. If the smartest ‘individual’ and the wealthiest ‘businessman’
gives you a present, will you reject it? Will you ask questions? Obviously not.
So why are we so ignorant regarding the Torah and Sukkot? The answer is because
if we weren’t we would never appreciate the beauty of the Mitzvah, of learning
Torah, of sitting in the Sukkah, of shaking the Lulava nd Etrog and on and on.
Only when we overcome our ignorance and questions and say: “I
am doing it because I see in the Torah that Hashem commanded me! What excuse do
I have?” only then do we taste the most delicious and satisfying feeling of
spiritual happiness. Why in Sukkot? Because in Sukkot we do everything against
nature. When it gets cold people go inside their home, we go outside into a
temporary hut with no heat because we are testifying: Hashem, You are The
Creator of this world, If You are telling me to do it, I know that it’s the BEST
THING IN THE WORLD FOR ME.
So smile, its Sukkot.
Khag Sameakh!
