For the Ilui
Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel For the Refua Shlema of Yaakov Hai
ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:
1. One how uses the restroom must use it in modesty, meaning
when undressing the individual should reveal whatever is meant to be revealed. Even
though the Gemara teaches not to
reveal more than a tefah’s worth in the front and two tefahs (a small
measurement) behind, today the restrooms are kept private so one does not have to be
stringent with these measurements. One should also be cautious to stay modest even at
night and in the dark. All individuals must be cautious regarding this,
not only Talmidei Hachamim (Torah
Scholars). Even for a man to use the restroom only for liquids, he should still
be modest. One can even delay using the restroom for a short time in order to
find a modest place to excrete. If one is in a place where there is a terrible
smell causing him/her not to excrete and only by opening the door they will
succeed, then one can be lenient and open the door. It is also appropriate and
recommended to teach a katan (boy
under 13) to get used to modest behavior in the bathroom, including staying silent.
2. One who is using the bathroom may not speak to his/her
friend outside the door, speak on the phone or any other type of speech. In any
case, if one has a phone call and be ignoring the call they will lose profit,
or it is in the case of a sick person, one can be lenient and answer the phone
while limiting his/her words as much as possible. But if its for any other
reason one should avoid speaking in the restroom, even if its only speaking to family.
But if its for restroom issues, such as lack of toilet paper or baby wipes,
then one may ask for them while using the restroom.
