For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L & Yissachar ben Yona Z’L.
Since the Ben Ish Hai
(Rav Yosef Haim T’ZKL) passed away on the 14th of Elul (98 years-12
days ago), they wrote up a pamphlet regarding the importance of Hodesh Elul and
its connection to everyone’s neshama
(soul).
Taken from the pamphlet: What is Hodesh Elul? The month
(hodesh) of Elul is a time of self reflection and improvement (and most
importantly teshuva, which means changing
one’s actions). Hashem did such a big favor with us that He gave us Hodesh Elul
because it is a time that can make or break your year. What do I mean? If
someone was foolish and did not pay attention to the sacred time Hashem gives
him/her by living in this world, this person most probably does not take full advantage
of his/her time to reach their spiritual potential.
Therefore, Hashem gave us Elul where we can make up that
enormous amount of time (all the other months of the year) by fixing this month
(or in our case the couple of days left until Rosh HaShanah). This is taught
from a Pasuk in VaYikrah that Rav Yaakov Avuchatzera ZY’A brings down: “Va’Asher Lo Tzadah Ve’Ha’Elokim Ina LeYado
VeSamti Lecha Makom Asher Yanus Shamah.” Our Neshama is like a child that
needs to get fully nourished and fed by its adult (us). Therefore, if someone
did not do the act of Tzadah
(hunting) for the spiritual food that the Neshama needs, Hashem gave us a place
that gives out ‘free spiritual nourishment’ that the Neshama can munch and live
off of, Makom Asher Yanus Shamah.
Look how merciful Hashem is! He sees us make mistakes and
slightly go off the path of overall ultimate success with Torah and Mitzvot
(and having your heart for Hashem) and gives us an entire month to improve and
clean up all our misfortunes.
Even though Sunday is only a couple days away, this does NOT
mean we need to give up. You can still change for the better, after all life is
filled with change. The real test is if you GROW from it as a human being and
most importantly your relationship with Hashem.
