CLD #677

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L, Yissachar ben Yona ZT’L and Haviva bat Yocheved Z’L.
The next Parashat HaShavua (Weekly Torah Section) is Parashat Nitzavim. The Torah explains that Am Yisrael were “Nitzvaim” which means standing. Next week we will be spiritually standing before Hashem and get judged for the upcoming year. This means every event next year that can make or break our future is judged upon, every doctor visit, how healthy we will be, how successful we will be in our Torah learning, how well we do in our businesses, etc.

When someone is ordered to court on a specific day, whether it be three weeks from the date of the person receiving notice or even a day before, the person has to mentally prepare for the occasion. The individual will stand in front of a judge and will be asked specific questions and will need to know how to answer to pass the trial. What is different on Rosh HaShanah? The Judge is Hashem who sees and hears everything.

Many people think Rosh HaShanah is only about the delicious foods and being with family. Did you know there are many righteous people who barely eat and spend time with their families on Rosh HaShanah because they learn the seriousness of the day. The truth is no one expects us to jump 5 or 10 levels ahead of where we are now a single week before this great day, but we are expected from Hashem to PREPARE for this day. There is only a week left. What can we do?!

The minimum is be careful of our actions this week: watch what we say, watch our anger levels, give more tzedakah, go to selihot, pray with more kavana, read tehillim, do more than what you did last week. Always push forward and move onwards with your Avodat Hashem (Jewish service). Therefore, we must understand to LEARN about Rosh HaShanah and ASK our Rabbis what its really all about (besides for the fact we know its about getting judged for next year).

SHAVUA TOV!
