For the Ilui
Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel For the Refua Shlema of Yaakov Hai
ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from The Rambam’s Mishneh Torah Hilchot Teshuva:
1. Perek Aleph Halacha Het (1:8) In the time when the Bet
HaMikdash is not erected on Har HaMoriah and we do not have a mizbeah (alter) to sacrifice korbanot (animal sacrifices) there is
nothing but Teshuva (repentance) that takes its place. Teshuva
atones for all sins, even if an individual is a wicked person all his life and
he/she does Teshuva in the end the Heavens do not remind him/her of their
wickedness, as it is written in Yehezkel 33:12 (“and the wickedness of the wicked-he will not stumble upon it on the day
of his repentance of his wickedness”) and Yom Kippur itself atones for
people who do Teshuva as it is written in VaYikrah 16:30 (“for on this day He shall effect atonement for you to cleanse you…”) Translations
taken from Chabad.org.
2. What is complete Teshuva? An Individual who has the
opportunity to repeat a sin where the sin is directly in front of him/her and
because of Teshuva he/she obtains from doing it, not from fear and not from the
lack of strength to do it. How? For the individual who had relations with a
woman in any sinful way and after a while had the chance with the same lustful
desire and physical strength level and same country and decided not to sin,
this is a ba’al teshuva (one who has
done full teshuva). This is what Shelomo meant when he said in Kohelet 12:1, “And remember your Creator in the days of
your youth…”
