For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel
For the Refua Shlema of Yaakov Hai ben Margalit shlit’a.
Taken from Rav Ovadia Yosef’s Halacha Emails:
1. It is urgent upon ourselves to boost our Teshuva
(repentance) during these days of ben
hametzarim, to add kedusha (holiness) in regards to watching one’s eyes
from immoral things, watching one’s speech and thoughts. It is important now to
work on one’s middot (characteristics) and on unity between
all brothers of Israel, which is the reason we are not seeing Mashiach in our
time (hatred between Jews).
2. It is good to be cautious and avoid entering a situation
where one can say the Berahca of Shehecheyanu during these days of ben hametzarim on a ‘new’ fruit or a new
piece of clothing. One should put aside the new fruit/clothing aside until
after Tisha B’av because its best if they use it and say Birkat Shehecheyanu
together. It is a minhag (custom) to avoid eating ‘new’ fruits during these
times because how can one say the Beracha of blessing Hashem regarding the
thanks in reaching “these times” (of happiness), when its really times of
mourning and suffering for Am Yisrael. However if there is a pregnant woman who
desires a ‘new’ fruit that fits in regards to the Shehecheyanu Beracha
(blessing), she can eat it and say Shehecheyanu.
