For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel
For the Refua Shlema of Chai Yaakov ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:
1. It is necessary for the entire household to pay close
attention to the words of the Kiddush from the beginning until the end
throughout Shabbat, which is said by the oldest person in the home. All the
people sitting down for the Shabbat meal must have the intention that the
person saying Kiddush is saying it to fulfill their obligation and the person
saying Kiddush must have the intention that he is saying the Kiddush for
everyone. The listeners do not have to say the Kiddush word for word because
they fulfill the Mitzvah of Kiddush just by listening.
2. There is a Halacha that states one cannot learn and/or
read by candle light because Chachamim (our Sages) were suspicious that one
would tip the candle so more light will show on Shabbat (which is not allowed
because of Hava’ara). In regards to
electric light, if one has a source of light from a lamp or any pocket sized
light, Halacha allows one to learn and/or read by this light. Why? Because we
cannot create a new Gezera, decree, from
our own logical reasons. The electric light is allowed for learning/reading on
Shabbat because we cannot come to say this is prohibition like the candlelight situation,
which was decreed before the Talmud was signed. After the Talmud was signed we
cannot come up with new decrees.
