CLD #541

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
Have you ever heard of “Spring Cleaning?”
Before Pesach whoever runs the home does serious cleaning. Why? What does this symbolize?

First of all, the Issur (prohibition) of Chametz. The Torah is not extremely strict with so many things. For example if there is a drop of milk that falls into a huge pot of meat and the meat outnumbers the drop of milk 60 to 1, then the meat is still allowed to be eaten (Batel B’Shishim). However, if there is a drop of Chametz, lets say noodle soup that was left behind in a fridge a day before Pesach that has now been accidentally dropped into Matzah cake mixer on Pesach, the entire Matzah cake mixer needs to go to the trash! G-d willing we will be tackling the entire idea of Chametz and Pesach in the next month to come.

So what can we learn from Spring cleaning, a.k.a. Cleaning the home to take out all the chametz (leavened bread) in all the hidden places around the home? We need to know that every Holiday, every Chag, has an incredible amount of spiritual energy that comes with it when it enters the world. Therefore, we need to prepare. Just like we prepare for the IPO of a company, so too lehavdeel for the “IPO” of Spiritual Kedusha, for a Holiday arriving!

Therefore our personal spiritual cleaning should begin as well. What am I doing right? What am I doing wrong? Do I take time in my day to thank Hashem? Do I take time in my day to learn a piece of Torah just like I take hours in my day to skim through facebook?

What are my great characteristics that I can channel to help my Avodat Hashem, my Mitzvot, my Chessed, all my good activities?

I am a Jew. I have so much potential. Why don’t I get there? What is stopping me?
There is so much to do. Pesach is less than 30 days. Before we know it we’ll be at the Sedder Table with no changes from last year. We always should improve we always should look at the bright future.

Judaism=Think.
