For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel
For the Refua Shlema of Chai Yaakov ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Mekor Chaim Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:
1. One is not allowed to set up for him/herself a meal on
Erev Shabbat (Friday in itsd entirety)
that he/she is not used to having during the week, even if it’s a meal for an
engagement. Lichvod Shabbat (for the
respect of Shabbat), one should walk into the meals with an appetite. One is
allowed to eat a small amount of food or drink a beverage without the
declaration of eating a meal (Kviyat
Seuda) throughout the entire day of Erev Shabbat (Friday). However, it is a
Mitzvah to avoid having these small meals from 9.5 Sha’ot Zmaniyot (Jewish Hours) after Sunrise (which is around
12:40pm EST).
2. However, if someone is invited to a Seudat Mitzvah on Erev Shabbat (a festive Mitzvah meal, like Pidyon
Ha’Ben or Brit Milah on Fridat), then they are allowed to feast and enjoy the
accomplishment of the Mitzvah. At the same time, it is suggested and
recommended to make this meal as early as possible on Friday morning.
