For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
Taken from Rav Ovadya Yosef's Halacha Website (halachayomit.co.il):
1. One should be extremely meticulous
regarding the Mitzvah of kindling the Chanukah lights for it is a very
beloved Mitzvah, because through it we publicize the miracle with thanks
to Hashem, blessed is He. Our Sages have taught us (Shabbat 23b) that
one who fulfills this Mitzvah properly will merit having children who
are Torah scholars. They derived this from the verse “For a Mitzvah is a
candle and Torah is light” (Mishlei Ch. 6); Rashi there explains that
through a candle associated with a Mitzvah (i.e. Chanukah candles) the
light of Torah comes about. The Meiri further elaborates that this means
that this Mitzvah must be done in a beautified and loving manner.
2. Women are also obligated to light Chanukah
candles for they were also included in the miracle of Chanukah.
Therefore, even if a woman is married, and her husband is unable to
light the candles at home, for instance because he has to travel
overseas, it is preferable for the husband to appoint his wife as his
messenger to light the Chanukah candles on his behalf at home. In this
way, the husband fulfills his obligation even though he is not present
at the time of the lighting.
