For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
Guess what? We can still continue to learn things
from the full 8 days of lighting Chanukah Candles. Baruch Hashem, we follow Bet Hillel from the Gemara in Masechet
Shabbat that states to go and add a candle every night. What can we learn from
this?
Everyday in our lives is completely different.
As we say in Shacharit every morning before Shema Yisrael, HaMechadesh BeTuvu Bechol
Yom Ma’aseh Bereshit, the one who
renews in His goodness everyday the creation of Bereshit!
So what does this have to do with Chanukah
Candles? We are all like candlesticks in hundreds of thousands of Menorahs all
over the world. We are all renewed every single day. Even if G-d forbid we have
reached low levels of Tumah
(impurity) from the sins we have done, we need to know that TOMORROW IS A NEW
DAY. Tomorrow is a day of Teshuva
(repentance). At the same time we need to know to use up the day with the
appropriate flame (the actual fire the burns the wax), which is with the
appropriate Torah.
Baruch Hashem, as it says in Prikei Avot: Ezehu Chacham? HaRoeh Et HaNolad (Who is
the smart one? The one who sees the created.) The Nolad (created) here is the actual creation of the world that
occurs everyday, the actual OPPORTUNITY and CHANCE we get from Chasdei Hashem
(the mercy of Hashem) to come back to Him and return with no problems
whatsoever! Again we see Hashem’s great Rachamim through Chanukah.
Chanukah is a time of deep thought and
relfection of where we are at. For the past three months we had a spiritual
‘halt’ from Chagim and general big-time connections with Hashem. But Hashem
gave us this time to work on ourselves. Look how fast it disappeared before our
eyes! No worries. Chanukah is here to gain this time back by working on
ourselves. This eight days are eight days of Simcha and Avodat Hashem.
Why is Chanukah during the shortest days of
the year and the deepest part of the winter? Because in every dark location/setting
(and every other situation), Hashem is always controlling everything. We just
need to see it. The Menorah symbolizes Hashem’s presence in the darkest times
of our lives.
