CLD #460

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
What can we learn from the actual act of lighting candles, the wax melting, and the fire burning out?
Life is all about spiritual and physical obstacles. As we know from Mishlei, the Torah is actual light. By searching Google, I found a Pasuk in Mishlei (6:23) that the Ramchal (Rav Moshe Chaim Luzzato) writes a drasha about. He explains that the Torah is not figurative light, its ACTUAL PHYSICAL LIGHT!
We always want to achieve the highest form of living, a HAPPY AND MEANINGFUL LIFE! In the Chanukah candles (and all candles) there is fire and wax. We can say that wax symbolizes life. The only way we ‘use’ up life FOR REAL is by lighting up the wick. The Torah is fire, its actual light, without Torah we are not experiencing REAL LIFE. Especially in the American society, we are all lifted by society’s commercials, advertisements, movies and TV Shows and never have a minute to relax and meditate or think about anything.
Chanukah is a time to re-light our Neshamot (souls) and open up our hearts to Hashem. To take a second and just think about all the important things in life and all our goals we want to reach.
The Ramchal explains that the words of the Torah contain inside them a special spiritual fire that is impossible to see without looking deep inside them. What does he compare the Torah’s light to? A burning coal. The coal on the outside looks burnt out, but when you shake off the burnt ash, you see a blazing fire in the core of the coal. The Torah’s spiritual power is only a shake away. We just have to want it.

And the ‘easy way’ to the Torah is through Chanukah! The Koach (strength) of Chanukah is tremendous. B’H we should have the zchut to get some of this Koach and just strive to reach our spiritual potentials.

Judaism=Think.
