For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef:
1. All of the oils and wicks are Kosher for Chanukah candles
even though some oils and wicks do not work together to help the fire light up
and that causes the light not to be so nice. Olive oil is the most favored (Mitzvah Min HaMuvchar) and recommended
oil to use for Chanukah candles because the light it supports is most
clear. And it is also a Mitzvah Min HaMuvchar to use Cotton Wool
for the wick. In a place where there is no oil present Rav Yitzchak Yosef
has the minhag (custom) to light
Chanukah Candles with wax because their light is also clear.
2. Whoever uses Wax Candles to light Chanukah Candles and
has even stuck the wax candles in the Menorah itself and then he/she suddenly
found oil, they should take out the Wax Candles and use oil instead because the
Mitzvah is best with oil. The Chanukah Nes
(miracle) in the Bet HaMikdash happened using oil, meaning even if it is any
oil; not olive oil, it is favored more than wax candles.
