The word in Hebrew (bottom left) means LIE. |
The Book in the Navi, Shoftim (Judges), tells the famous story of Am Yisrael after the
time of Yehoshua. This time is called the time of the Shoftim, the Judges who were
the leaders of the Nation after Yehoshua and the Zkenim (the Elders) died. The cycle was: Am Yisrael strayed from
the ways of following the Torah and doing Mitzvot to devoting their lives to
the Avodah Zara, Idolatry; they would
weep and cry to Hashem by doing Teshuva (repentance); then Hashem out of mercy
and love for His children would send a Shofet, a Judge, to teach them how to
build fences and tricks to overcome this urge to do Avodah Zara; then they
would disobey the Shofet’s rules and teachings (that were under prophecy) and
would continue the Avodah Zara from before and the cycle went on and on.
In the book of Shoftim, the author Shmuel
HaNavi, uses the verb “Zanu,” and
they went astray, to describes Am Yisrael doing the sin of Avodah Zara (Shoftim
2:17). In Masechet Yomah, the Gemara brings up a story that Chazal (the Sages)
destroyed 50% of the Yetzer Hara (Evil Inclination) and took out the urge of
sinning by Idolatry from the world. The only thing that was left was Sexual
Immorality. This is the ‘job’ that our generation and all generations after the
time of the Gemara, need to work on. Everything today has to do with sexual
pleasure and we know that sex is the best seller. So what does this have to do
with the pasuk from Shoftim (2:17)? The word zanu is very similar to the word Znut, which means prostitution. People always say today: THERE IS
NO AVODAH ZARA, so what is all the fuss about in the Torah and how is it
relevant today if the Torah is relevant to every generation?
Because the same urge we have for the opposite
sex and the body’s ratzon (will) to
do these immoral acts was the SAME URGE they had for Avodah Zara. The Torah is
coming to tell us: JUST LIKE I AM WARNING THE NATION IN THE DESERT OF ALL THESE
IMMORAL IDOLATRY ACTIONS, SO TOO FOR EVERY GENERATION the ‘idolatry action’
today is the sexual immorality!
What does this also show us? That the same energy and passion they had for the Avodah Zarah is equal to the same energy and passion they had for Hashem. How does this relate to us today? How do we know what our spiritual potentials are? The same effort we put into chasing after the opposite sex is the same effort we can have (plus much much more when realizing one's love for Hashem) for our Avodat Hashem and following the Torah.

B’H we should all come to the realization that
there is no word in all of Tanach that is superfluous and the Torah is but an
endless entity of wisdom, or can be viewed as ‘G-d’s brain.’
Judaism=Think.
I am so against what the Torah tells me to do, but have I ever
even read through the ENTIRE Torah once to see how G-d chose to write it, or to
see what’s fully in it?
