L’yilui Nishamt Avraham ben Ester, Shahin Shmuel
ben Hadassa &
Israel Ben Rivka.
From Chazon Ovadya:
1. It says in Vaykira 23:42,43 –
“For a Seven Day Period you shall live in Sukkot. Every Jew shall live in
Sukkot in order that your generations should know that I had the children of
Israel live in Sukkot when I took them out of the land of Mitzrayim. I am the
Lord, your G-d.” Chazal explain that these Seven days represent the Seven
Ananei HaKavod (Clouds of Glory). Therefore, it’s a Mitzvat Aseh to eat a
Kazayit amount of Bread (around 28 grams in 5 minutes or less) on the first
night of Sukkot (tonight) in the Sukkah. Eating the bread should be done when
it is nighttime for sure (meaning earliest 7:10pm tonight). The big Poskim (Rabbis
who organized the Halacha) wrote that being strict and eating Kazayit Pat in
the Sukkah throughout the entire
Chag (all seven days and not only the first night) is the correct way to go.
2. Sleeping in the Sukkah is mandatory throughout all Seven
Nights of Chag Sukkot and the Halacha of Sleeping in the Sukkah should be seen more
strict than the Halacha of eating in the Sukkah. We know this because eating
food other than Bread is allowed outside the Sukkah, but any time of sleep
(even a nap) has to be done in the Sukkah. Even if someone has a small Sukkah
and the only way to sleep/nap in it would be with discomfort and he/she would
have to bend their body, then the still have
to sleep in the Sukkah and they have no permission granted to sleep
anywhere else.
