CLD #400

For the Refua Shlema of Mordechai Tzvi ben Sara & Binyamin ben Blanka.
For anyone who knows a drop of Torah, they know that Moshe Rabbeinu took Am Yisrael out of Mitzrayim (Egypt) in the Hebrew month of Nissan (Pesach time/spring). Also they should know that the whole act of Am Yisrael dwelling in Sukkot in the Midbar (desert) was during that same period, the Hebrew Month of Nissan. If we celebrate Pesach and were taken out of Mitzrayim both during Nissan; then so too if the whole act of Sukkot happened in Nissan then we should also celebrate the Chag of Sukkot during Nissan!!!
So how come we don’t? There are two major reasons and both of them bring a smile to my face. Let’s see if they’ll do that to you too:
1. During the times of our great ancestors where heating systems were not part of their homes and boilers were not easily found, the winter was bitter. However, when the summer came, everyone really felt like Life was renewed once again throughout the entire world (pesach time is considered the beginning of summer)! So the children went outside, the adults walked with their loved ones barefoot on the fresh grass, the elderly had nice tents for shade from the bright shining sun, and everything was happily ever after (You can imagine the smell of the pretty flowers and the feeling of a light breeze whisking away by your feet)! So these Sukkot that were built, they were like these ‘summer tents’ that people lay out to relax and dwell in. It is true that in such an extreme weather condition location like the Midbar (desert), this weather change was already an act of Salvation for Am Yisrael. But Am Yisrael does not only look for the physical act of being close with Hashem and being comfortable. We have an intrinsic element of Emunah (faith) in our blood, where we are born with this passion to serve Hashem, love Him and want to always get closer to Him because this gives us eternal joy. So Am Yisrael as a Unified Entity goes against the entire world in its belief. Instead of being like the entire world where we leave our homes at the beginning of summer, we leave our homes at the beginning of WINTER!
Right at the smack of the beginning of the cold and the rain (this Wednesday Night’s forcast has a drop in temperature and chance of rain), we go out to these tents to show the world: We WANT to do what HASHEM TELLS US because He is our King, and that’s a PRIVILEGE! This thought just shows how simple, how natural, and how right the faith of a Jew is: we go against all humanity to be out in the cold and show our love and CARE that we were chosen to be Jewish. All because our Torah, which means Hashem: commands us too.

2. There is a deeper spiritual reason: Chet Ha’Egel was on 17 Tammuz. This is 40 days (<Shavuot> 7 Iyar– 17 Tammuz) after Moshe Rabbeinu went up to Har Sinai to receive the Torah and learn all the Halachot directly from Hashem. We all know Moshe came down and broke the First 10 Commandments. Also with a little Torah knowledge, we know that the Ananei HaKavod (Clouds of Glory) protected Am Yisrael throughout the entire journey in the Midbar in the merit of Aharon HaKohen.
Because of the Chet Ha’Egel, which was blamed on Aharon HaKohen, these Ananei HaKavod disappeared immediately after! Moshe goes up to Har Sinai again, with broken Luchot and a Am that wreaks of sin. He pleads for forgiveness for 40 days and 40 nights. If it wasn’t for Moshe’s Tefillot (prayers), Hashem would have annihilated Am Yisrael! Moshe comes down on the 29th of Av with news that Hashem wants the divine presence to permanently leave Am Yisrael. The nation fasts and mourns. Moshe goes up again on Rosh Chodesh Elul (3,324 years and 42 days ago) and asks for Hashem’s forgiveness. On Yom Kippur 2248, Moshe comes down with the second set of Luchot and Am Yisrael receives full forgiveness (shows Yom Kippur’s power of forgiveness). But there is no proof? So what did Hashem do? Four days later (I wonder why there was a 4 day waiting time) the Ananaei HaKavod re-appeared and there was an everlasting feeling of Eternal Simcha throughout Am Yisrael!

How lucky are we that we have Hashem to depend on ALL THE TIME!?
Sukkot is in 3 days.
