FAST ENDS: 7:07PM EST (Some wait until 7:39)
For the Refua Shlema of Mordechai Tzvi ben
Sara & Binyamin ben Blanka.
Derech Hashem by the Ramchal (Rav Moshe Chaim
Luzzato) gives us the basics of Yom HaKippurim and what it is all about: Hashem
set aside a full day for Am Yisrael that the Tshuva one does is easily accepted
in Shamayim, the sins one has done throughout the past year are easily
forgiven, and all the damage those sins have caused for the world are ‘fixed’
easily (to negate the spiritual darkness they have created for the entire
world).
This is summarized in one sentence: to bring back those who have
distanced from Hashem into a level of Spirituality, closeness, and Holiness. To
receive this loving act of kindness from Hashem, we push ourselves up to a
higher spiritual level of Malachim (angels) by fasting.
The Power of Tefillah (prayer) is seen from the book Alenu LeShabeach, which
speaks about stories of Emunah
(faith) & Bitachon(dependency) in
Hashem.
Parashat Pinchas includes the Korbanot (sacrifices) we bring to the
Beit HaMikdash during Yom Kippur. Alenu LeShabeach brings a beautiful story
about Aseret Yemei Tshuva and Yom Kippur. The author used to hire a barber for
years to come before Rosh HaShanah to give him and his family haircuts because
there is a concept of getting one before Yom Tov to respect the Holiness of the
Holiday.
One year the barber from a couple days before Rosh HaShanah up until a
couple days before Yom Kippur had many excuses and delays to come to the
author’s home to give the usual haircuts. It was getting really close to the
fast of Yom Kippur and the author and his family began to realize that their
option of having the barber come to their home might not happen this year. No
problem…The author walked to a nearby barbershop in the city (Yerushalayim Ir
HaKodesh) and waited on the long line happily. Obviously he was wondering why
Hashem directed him specifically there and why all of a sudden this year the
barber simply cannot make it?! So on line, out of no where someone basically
jumps on the author: “I CAN’T BELIEVE IT! Baruch HASHEM! HASHEM LISTENS TO OUR
PRAYERS!!! I am so sorry to scare you like this but I was waiting for this
moment for months! Now Rosh HaShanah has passed (hours before Yom Kippur) and I
was so worried!!! Let me tell you something: About 6 months ago we were both
standing at the Bus Stop by the Kotel (1 Bus for those who know it) and I was
right behind you on the line to get into the bus. Since it was a busy hour, I
was in a rush and thought I would have to wait another hour until the next bus
will come so I pushed and shoved and got in front of you. After a minute or two
the bus closed and drove away. I realized you stayed behind. After thinking
about it, I realized what I did was wrong, and I have been praying to Hashem to
have me confront you and find you even though I don’t know your name or where
you live just to ask for forgiveness! As you know one’s sins aren’t forgiven
between Hashem and Man if Man has not said sorry for his sins to his fellow Man
before Yom Kippur! Usually I go to the barbershop by my house (the other side
of Yerushalayim) but I came to meet one of the big Rabbis around here and there
was a sign outside his home that he is not accepting any visits for another
hour. I told myself I will get a haircut in the meantime. And look where Hashem
led me!”
We do not know the Cheshbonot (calculations) of Hashem, but at least know one thing:
Hashem wants us to realize HE CONTROLS OUR LIVES and HE WANTS US TO BELIEVE IN
HIM!
Yom Kippur Tip: HaSatan, the Devil in Hebrew, has a Gematriya (numerical value) of
364 that represents the 364 days of the year where he rules. There is one day
left, which is Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur is controlled fully by G-d and we are raised
to the level fo Angels where we can easily build a connection with Hashem. Let’s take advantage of such a holy day
(Plus its Shabbat Kodesh).
Top 2: For men only: Read First 4 Chapters of
Tehillim before you sleep tonight. It is a Segula to lessen the chance of
waking up with wasted seed Yom Kippur morning (which is not a good sign, for
more info e-mail theCLD).
SHABBAT SHALOM!
Yom
Kippur is TONIGHT.
