If man was brought into the world, why is he
mortal? Also, if his end is in the grave, why is he put in this world in the
first place?
To understand really well that there are spiritual forces in the world that EXIST for our benefit. These two forces,
that have an opposite attraction to eachother, created by Hashem, are called
the Yetzer Hatov and the Yetzer Hara (The Good and Evil Inclinations).
How can we understand these terms using
objects from our daily lives?
A Vending Machine. Yes, a VENDING MACHINE.
The Yetzer Hara’s vending machine is beautiful;
it is actually the invested product in the world. There are the most delicious
looking items to buy, and the vending machine does not even cost money to plug
into your outlet, it’s the most proficient and efficient electronic vending
machine in the world. Also, another benefit is that the items are so cheap! Due
to the advanced technology, the vending machine gives you the snack/beverage
immediately and even has it opened for you with a napkin ready for the oil,
mess, etc.! However there is a catch, everything is all good and beautiful, but
the food/berevege received is not so tasty, also the food is probably spoiled,
damaged, or simply not the correct food with the corresponding brand name. But
who cares, the entire vending machine is so cool to use, in regards to its
advanced technology and magnificent design, just to use it is a benefit! I
don’t care about the snack I am getting in the end!
The Yetzer Hatov’s vending machine is disgusting.
It barely works and its been repaired maybe 30 times in the last 2 years. Its
old, its dusty, the bags and cans are all slimy with mold on it, and there are
some snacks and drinks that look somewhat manageable to hold without getting
your hands dirty. The machine itself causes a lot of money and brings so much
trouble. Your parents yell at you for even buying it. Such a waste of time.
However, there is a single benefit, inside the dirty and slimy cans and food
packages, comes the most tasteful snacks and drinks the world can imagine! You
simply open up a bag and get 5 or 6 times the amount you would get from a
regular bag. You open up the dirty can and when you drink from it (after
cleaning it of course) the drink is EXACTLY what you want.
This metaphor is exactly what life with the
Torah is and what life without the Torah is like. Today, unfortunately, people
do not even realize they are living in a world that is controlled by there
Yetzer Hara (it might even be for people in yeshiva or people learning Torah
daily, you never know). The whole challenge of life is to know that we are in a
war, literally a battlefield with constant fire back and forth between us (the
Yetzer Hatov) and our biggest enemy that wants us to fall > the Yetzer Hara.
How do we know that this exists? Try to for 10
days to test yourself: Do NOT eat the last 10% of the next meals for the next
10 days. From the intensity of avoiding to eat the last 10% of all the next
meals you will see that there is such a thing as a Yetzer Hara. If you want to
know why avoiding eating the last 10% of your meal is something that the EVIL
inclination would do, email me.
Our Parasha says: “Ki Tetzeh LaMilchama…” If you go out to war against your enemies… (chabad.org). What is your enemy?
The Yetzer Hara. We need to know that there is an Evil Inclination and we
always need to know to live in peace at the same time. This balance is the goal
to success in life and what Judaism is all about. What better way to test the truth and see if the Yetzer Hatov (following the Torah) is the happiest way than to try to keep this Shabbat?!
SHABBAT SHALOM!
Yom
Kippur is in 29 days.
Rosh
HaShanah is in 19 days.
Selichot
has already BEGUN.
