From Ve'En Lamo Michshol:
1. It is written in the Torah HaKdosha: "Mipne Seva Takum VeHadarta Pnei Zaken," and Chachamim commentary includes: "Seva" is one who is a Zakin in years (70 years old) and a "Zaken" is one who is a Talmid Chacham, even if he is young in years. One HAS to stand up in their Respect, literally standing on both feet, and it is not enough just to lean forward in a hop respect formation. And the majority of Am Yisrael fail at this Halacha when they see a Chacham or Zaken because they do not stand on both feet in front of them, and there is no such Mekel (leniency) for this Halacha.
2. One has to stand up for a Chacham and a Zaken when the person is in a 6 foot radius of the Chacham or Zaken. There are those who stand up immediately in the presence of a Zaken and/or Chacham who enters the Beit Knesset, however one does not HAVE TO (but could be strict and) stand for him, but one should only if the Chacham and/or Zaken is in the 6 foot radius of the person.
SHAVUA TOV!
