1. It is a mitzvah “LeAneg Et HaShabat.” To prepare for Shabat and make it different than all other days is a mitzvah (Oneg Shabat).
2. Writing in general is not allowed on Shabat. Ripping a piece of paper with letters on it, therefore erasing letters also helps make Shabat more spiritually.
