Translated from Mekor Chaim Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:

1. One is not allowed to taste anything before Kiddush has been heard, even water. Even if someone accidentally forgot to do Kiddush and has eaten and drunk, at the moment they remember they have forgotten Kiddush, they must say it then and there. If someone forgot completely to say Kiddush at night then they say it throughout the entire 25 hours of Shabbat (the proper Kiddush to be said in this situation is the one of the night, even if it is daytime).

2. There needs to be a tablecloth underneath the bread for Shabbat and there needs to be a type of cloth covering the bread as well. In the time of Moshe Rabbeinu (written in our Parasha) the Mann that was brought down from Shamayim (the Heavens) had dew on top of it and below it, so these cloths represent the rememberance of the Miracle of Mann. Because there is an obligation to say Kiddush, we say the Beracha of HaMotzi only after the Kiddush has been said.

What is Tefillin like? In Ironman we know the main character builds a super technologically advanced suit that has a special arm repulsor weapon and an even more sophisticated helmet that just looks cool. Lehavdeel, in order to understand in our tiny brains what the concept of wearing Tefillin is, we can compare it to the power of having an arm repulsor and an Ironman helmet!

When one believes in the Torah, they know that when following it they are just surrounded by Hashem’s greatness and love.

This is why David HaMelech reached the super high spiritual levels that he reached! He understood that everything is from Hashem and instead of dwelling and failing inside the problem, we just need to turn to Hashem for the solution or at least the relaxation that is urgently needed in times of stress.

Be’ezrat Hashem we can see that in one of David HaMelech’s most famous books. It has 150 Perakim and is part of Tanach. This book is called Tehillim, or Pslams. In Perek 42 David HaMelech compares his need to be close to Hashem like a deer that is thirsty for water. David HaMelech writes like this: “ As a deer cries for rivulets of water, so does my soul cry longingly to you, O G-d.” We can literally hear David’s weeping and crying to Hashem to just be glued to Him! David HaMelech doesn't have anything better to do? He constantly has enemies to take care of or run away from. He has a huge nation to lead (especially being Jews it was porbably extremely difficult). He has to worry about the heir to the family and the quarries and murders between them for the next generation's power. Anyway, what happened was and will always be in the hands of Hashem.

 

Be’ezrat Hashem even if we just understand where David is coming from we know we are on the correct path of living as Ivdei Hashem and continuing to grow spiritually.

1. When on enters Bet Knesset (Shul) and finds the Congregation saying Kiryat Shema, this person must read the first pasuk (verse/line) of Kriyat Shema with the people, because if not it seems like this person does not want to Accept upon him/herself Ol Malchut Shamayim, or the Kingship of Heaven. This is said about a person who has gotten up to a part of the Tefillah (prayer) where he/she can stop and be involved with something else, but in a case where they cannot; this person just puts his/her hand over their eyes and says in his/her heart the first Pasuk of Kriyat Shema with Baruch Shem Kevod Malchuto Le’Olam Va’ed.

2. In Kriyat Shema there are 245 words. Because each human has a total of 248 limbs in the body, the Shaliach Tzibbur (emissary of the congregation) says Hashem Elokechem Emet to complete 3 more words after the 245 words said by everyone (totaling 248). If the individual would like, he/she can also say these words with the Shaliach Tzibbur. Also the one who is reading Kriyat Shema alone (at home, in school, etc.), they can also add in these three words.

CLD #500

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.

Being the 500^th CLD, we cannot let this Dvar Torah be a simple walk in the park Chizuk. This might sound like the most simple Torah explained in the blog’s history but it is one of the most fundamental parts of Judaism.

In Pirkei Avot, the First Mishnah of the First Perek begins with the Tanah (Sage) explaining the tradition of the Mishnayot being passed down from Moshe (who received the Mishnah from Sinai/Hashem) all the way to the Anshei Knesset HaGedolah (Men of the Great Assembly from 2000 years ago).

On this Mishnah, Rav Ovadya MeBartenura (a commentator on the Mishnah) says something beautiful that brings out a fundamental piece of Judaism on paper. Bartenura says in his first comment on Pirkei Avot: “This Masechet (tractate) does not include mostly Halachot like other Masechtot, rather has words of rebuke and improving one’s characteristics. The wise of the other nations also have made up books that direct a person to the ideal way of behaving with another person. This is the reason that the Tanah (Sage who wrote this Mishnah) began with Moshe received the full Torah (Oral & Written) from Sinai [to teach that even these pieces of Torah that are 100% logical also came directly from Hashem].”

Wow. This is a fundamental point in Judaism.

We need to understand well that we are separate from the other nations. We are on a different sphere/world completely! Anything that is passed down from generation to generation in our culture/in our life is from Moshe MiSinai. From Hashem who spoke to our highest Rabbi, the biggest Navi (prophet) that ever stepped on planet Earth: Moshe Rabbeinu. We are Am Segula (the treasured nation). We are part of the Torah’s future. We are the Torah’s future.

We just need to live it Be’ezrat Hashem. And more importantly, we need to know it is a privilege.
