Translated from Mekor Chaim Kitzur Shulchan Aruch & Rav
Ovadia’s Halacha Emails:
1. One must send specifically on Purim Day to his friend Mishloah
Manot which is made up of Meat or Foods as it says in Megillat Esther “UMishloach Manot Ish LeRe’ehu,” two
manot to one person. All who greaten this Mitzvah in number of people and
number of foods are praised. If someone cannot do this Mitzvah, they should
take their Purim Seudah (plate) and hand it over to the person next to them and
they both should switch, fulfilling Mishloach Manot. However, the ikar (essence) of Mishloach Manot is
sending expensive and quality foods/items to a friend on Purim Day.
2. Even if one sends Mishloach Manot to someone who is
diagnosed with Diabetes and cannot
enjoy sweet foods and/or candies, because the actual delivery of the Mishloach
Manot are done in a lovable fashion with the intention of showing friendship
and kindness to the receiver, they still fulfill the Mitzvah of Mishloach
Manot. However, one should be cautious in regards to this Mitzvah because if
they know that the person is not able to eat from this package and will be
upset because the food reminds him/her of their health condition; they should
avoid sending sweets and should send something that will add on to the person’s
Simha (happiness) of Purim.
Purim Sameah!
