Translated from Yalkut Yosef:
1. If an individual mistakenly began praying to the north or
south (and not to Jerusalem) and in the middle of their prayer they noticed it,
then they should turn their face to the east even though they’re entire body is
directed to the north or south. However, if an individual is praying to the
west direction and his/her back is to the east (which is the direction of
Israel), they need to turn their entire body around to face east. An individual
who sees their friend who is facing the opposite direction of Jerusalem needs
to stop their prayer and tell them to face Jerusalem.
2. Lechatihila
(the best way) is to set a place for the Hacham
(the “wise” of the congregation, usually referring to the Rabbi) for prayer in
the eastern side of the Shul close to the Aron
HaKodesh (the Ark where the Sifrei Torah rest).
