Translated from Yalkut Yosef Online (Yalkut.Info):
1. It is a Mitzvah from the Torah to pray everyday as it
says, “Ve’Avadetem Et Hashem Elokechem”, “And
You Shall Worship Hashem, your G-d.” Our Hachamim (Sages) have learned that
this type of worship is Tefillah (prayer). Also we learn from our Hachamim that
Worshipping from one’s heart is Tefillah. Ezra and his Bet Din (Court House)
fixed for our nation 18 Berachot (Blessings) in Shmoneh Esreh (Amidah Prayer):
the first three are to praise Hashem and the last three are to thank Hashem and
the middle berachot (12) are general Berachot for all needs. From the Torah one
is commanded to pray only once daily, but from DeRabanan (our Sages) we must
pray three different Tefillot (prayers) on a daily basis.
2. The Rishonim (Hachamim
from 1000-1500 C.E.) disputed whether the obligation to pray is from The Torah
or commanded by our Hachamim, and there are several nafkah minah’s (points of differentiation) in regard to the Law
itself. For example, if we say that Tefillah (prayer) is from the Torah then
women are also obligated to pray everyday at least once daily, but if the
obligation is from our Rabbis, which explain that we need to ask mercy from
Hashem and that is the reason why we pray, women also need mercy from Hashem
and they must pray the morning and afternoon Tefillot. The Halacha is that
women must pray at least one Tefillah everyday.
