The Ben Ish Hai provides us with a beautiful Derasha on our Parasha, Parashat VaYetzeh. Our Parasha continues with the action packed story of our Avot (our Fathers). This Parasha goes into detail regarding Yaakov’s dream of the ladder, Yaakov’s stay at the Yeshiva of Shem and Ever, Yaakov’s arrival to Haran, Yaakov’s cheated marriage to Leah, Yaakov’s marriage to Rahel, our Emahot’s struggles of birth, the birth of 11 Shevatim and the preparation of meeting Esav. Tonight we will focus with the help of Hashem on the Ben Ish Hai’s derasha on yaakov’s words to Lavan (his father in law which was super wicked).
The Torah explains that Yaakov tells Lavan (Bereshit 29:21) Bring me my wife because my days have been completed and I will come to her. The words that describe “and I will come to her” are VeAvoah Eleha in Hebrew. In Masechet Sottah (17a) the Ben Ish Hai brings down a famous piece of Talmud that says if a husband and wife are privileged then they have the Divine Presence rest between them and if they are not FIRE consumes them. It is known that the word fire – Esh – is in the word Ish (man) and Isha (woman) in Hebrew, where if there is the Divine Presence between them the word Esh erases in both their names and the two letters Yud-Hei (the name of God) results.
Yaakov Avinu tells Lavan when its time to be with Rahel: bring me my wife because I want to marry her and I will come to her, which is Hebrew to her breaks down into the letters Aleph-Lamed-Yud-Hei, meaning to Yud-Hei, to the Divine Presence that rests between a married couple!
When an individual lives with the Torah they live with the Divine Presence resting inside them. When an individual promotes the Torah in their home they have their home turn into a vessel where Hashem personally rests in! When Hashem is a guest in your home, there is serenity, there is peace, there is love and there is personal spiritual growth.
Be’ezrat Hashem bizchut our forefather Yaakov Avinu, who was Ish Emet (A Man of Truth), we will be truthful to ourselves and pinpoint our weaknesses to better work on ourselves to become closer to Hashem and promote goodness and growth throughout our lives and the people around us.
Shabbat Shalom!
