HaRav Nissim Yagen ZT”L (he past away in our generation) was
a huge inspirational speaker and leader in the State of Israel. There is a book
my friend has that is called, Koha Shel
Shabbat (The Power of Shabbat) that entails many pieces of Torah that
Rav Yagen spoke about and I would like to share a couple pages with you.
The entire book speaks about the strength of Shabbat Kodesh
and its power over rising above the natural actions and behaviors of this world
and picking up this world and everyone and everything with it to a level of
purity we will never fully grasp. Because it is officially Wednesday night (which
is the first night that relates to the upcoming Shabbat as the week revolves
around Shabbat) and Rosh Hodesh, I would like to speak about the beauty of the
Mitzvot regarding Shabbat.
In the Book Yeshayahu 11:9, the Navi (prophet) explains to
us that in the days to come the entire world will be filled with the notion
that Hashem exists and runs the show. Rav Yagen breaks this Pasuk down to a
level that matches to theCLD theme of living Torah with our heart and not only
our minds. The Pasuk explains this theme of the knowledge of Hashem’s rule to
the knowledge of the water that covers the ocean. Rav Yagen says one time he
was standing at the seashore facing the Atlantic Ocean which was quiet and had
calm waves smoothly gliding onto the beach. He thought to himself: I can die
right here, right now, I can easily drown by swimming into the ocean!
Everything is forbidden here! Why do I even come to this place that holds the
possibility of death?!
However, says Rav Yagen ZT”L, if we look deeper underneath
the surface of the ocean, there is an entire worlds of depths of beautiful
plants, coral, huge trees from the ocean’s floor, parks and parks of beauty and
Hashem’s wisdom! Worlds of light and radiance! Hashem says from the mouth of
the Navi in the Pasuk above: If we look
at Judaism from a bird’s eye view all we see is darkness and fear, these
religious people are fanatic, they’re black hat and crazy! However, if we just
dive into the Judaism’s depths and essence, we taste it a little and we see its
all good, its all bliss and its an eternal light of happiness.
When we step into the core of the Torah and the levels of
Judaism we see real joy and great amounts of serenity and exhilaration! Tonight
marks Rosh Hodesh Kislev, when we can do many Mitzvot just by going to Shul,
saying Hallel, listening to the Torah, praying the Amida, saying a little
Tehillim after, eating a meal with bread after minyan, etc. Tonight marks the
first day looking at Shabbat and Shabbat is only one slice of what Judaism is
all about, and Shabbat is one sixtieth of Gan Eden (Heaven), so Hashem shows us
only a tiny bit of what Olam Haba (the afterlife) is all about!
Judaism=Think.
Hodesh Tov!
