For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L, Yissachar ben Yona ZT’L and Haviva bat Yocheved Z’L.
This
Devar Torah was told to me by Ohav Kahalany, a close friend of mine in Yeshiva.
In each person’s life they have three different types of friends. The first and
closest friend makes sure he/she is always calling them, making sure
they are okay, attending all the special parties and honoring. They state the
importance of there friendship and make sure everyone sees and knows they are
close.
The
second one calls once in a while. This type of friendship is medium in its
intensity. They always say hi to each other and speak once a week. They always
make sure to contact in the important dates of the year and during the Hagim. They
are there for them in the most serious of times but not always during the less
important things.
The
third friend is the one that they barely speak to. Yes, they are friends with
them but they do not really see them all the time. When they do they say hi and
share past experiences and whatever happened from the last time they spoke.
They always make sure they stay on good terms once every couple of months.
Now
imagine the IRS comes to this individual and tells them we have a report here
showing your tax fraud and you have a court case in the upcoming months. The
person will blow up. What to do? Where to go? The first friend comes to him and
says I can’t help you man, this is bad! The second friend comes and weeps to
him: You know what, this is a disaster so I will come with you to the court and
show my support. But I will not testify. I can’t do it, it is too risky. That
would mean I am in the ditch with you. The third friend, the one that was so
far away comes and says: Don’t worry Moshe, I will come with the best lawyers,
I will hook you up. We will get through this together You have nothing to worry
about. Also I will personally stand up there and testify in front of the
cruelest prosecutors.
This
story symbolizes the things and people we connect with in our lives. We have
three different friends in this world. The first is the money. The cash in our
pocket is the ‘social status’ in our lives. Unfortunately, in some communities
we are ranked based on our income. Ater 120 the money in our bank accounts does
NOT come up with us in front of Hashem. It stays in this world. It says: Sorry,
I can’t help you. I cant testify. The second friend is our families. They will
be with us throughout all our birthdays and parties and celebrations and will
show their faces. After 120 they will say: We love you and we will do Mitzvot
in your name, but we can only walk with you until the grave, Has VeShalom.
The
third and most important is the friend we always ignore and put aside. Its
Torah and Mitzvot. Our Torah Learning and Mitzvot will stand up for us forever
and ever in the High Courts of Shamayim (the Heavens) against all the
prosecutors and sin we created in this world. The Torah and Mitzvot will stand
for us and say: WE WILL GLADLY TESTIFY ON YOUR BEHALF! We need to stick this
deep in our hearts everyday: Hashem is the King of the World and we will be
judged for every action we do. Hashem is our Father and He has mercy on us over
every action we do.
