KOL HASHONEH HALACHOT BECHOL YOM MUVTACH LO SHEH'HOO BEN HA'OLAM HABA

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel For the Refua Shlema of Yaakov Hai ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Rav Ovadia’s Halacha Emails:

1. It is known on Shabbat that one is prohibited from moving certain objects on Shabbat. This issur (prohibiton) is called Muktzeh and it breaks down into several parts. One aspect of Muktzeh is called Keli SheMelachto Heter, meaning a utensil/vessel that is allowed to use on Shabbat, like a fork or knife for eating or to move it to make room for another object. One is also allowed to move this objects if they are going to get ruined in their set location, for example if an object that is allowed to be used on Shabbat is in the sun and the light can ruin it, an individual can move it to the shade even if its just to avoid the damage that will be caused.

2. Another section of the Mukzteh category is Muktzeh Mehamat Hesron Kees, meaning objects that are expensive that the owner would not allow others to touch/use. Therefore, an expensive object that one may not use on Shabbat anyway, such as store merchandise, a camera, a shehita knife (for slaughtering) may not be moved on Shabbat even if it will get ruined in the sun or it needs to be moved to make space for something else. However, all objects that cannot lead one to perform a prohibited action on Shabbat, such as Silver Shabbat Candle Sticks or an expensive painting can be moved on Shabbat even though the owners are cautious that they will not get damaged.

3. It is a positive active Mitzvah (Mitzvat Aseh) to hear the Shofar blast on the day of Rosh HaShanah. During the blasts themselves and in between each blast one may not speak or even say vidui (repenting/confession prayer). Women are exempt from listening to the Shofar because it is a time-bounded Mitzvah (Aseh SheHaZeman Gerama). However, women still act stringent to hear the Shofar on Rosh HaShanah and if a woman cannot attend Bet Kenesset (Shul) during the Shofar blasts, someone may do the Shofar Tekiyot for her without a berakha that is said in Bet Kenesset. The entire day is fitting for one to hear the Tekiyot of the Shofar until Sunset and one must have the intention that they are fulfilling the Mitzvah of the Shofar during the Shofar blasts.

4.It is written in the Midrash that Am Yisrael is the only nation in the globe that knows the behavior and judgment of Hashem because if a normal person has a court trial they are in terrible sadness and worry; however, the holy Am Yisrael before Rosh HaShanah, before Judgment Day for the entire upcomingyear, get haircuts and wear clothing of Yom Tov. Why? Because we as a nation are certain that through serious Teshuva (repentance), Tzedakah and Tefillah Hashem will forgive us for our sins and write us in the book of Tzadikkim (The Righteous).

Shabbat Shalom!
