For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L & Yissachar ben Yona Z’L.
HaRav Mugrabi shlit’a from Holon, Israel has a book called Ketonet Pasim that discusses issues of
Hizzuk (inspiriation) in regards to the Parasha of the Shavua (weekly Torah
portion). This week’s Parasha, Nitzavim, is one of the shortest Parshiyot in
the entire Torah, consisting of 40 pesukim (It is known that we read Parashat
Nitzavim every year before Rosh HaShanah and therefore maybe we can say the 40
pesukim, verses, symbolize the 40 days of Teshuva that begin on Rosh Hodesh
Elul and end on Yom Kippur).
Rav Mugrabi explains that Rabi Zusha From Anipoli used to
tell his students in the Bet Midrash the month of Tishrei (beginning on Rosh HaShanah,
Sunday night) is a big time for teshuva (repentance). Because Teshuva is so
complex and set up in such a way that it sometimes take a lifetime to do, Rav
Zusha offered to breakdown the word Teshuva (Tav-Shin-Vav-Bet-Hei) into an
acronym of 5 major pesukim (verses). The first one, symbolizing the first
letter of the word teshuva is Tav,
which will be the only pasuk we will focus on today in regards to Teshuva.
The letter tav in Teshuva stands for Tamim Tehiyeh Im Hashem Elohecha, be modest (innocent, simple) with
Hashem. This means that one should constantly be striving to work Hashem on a
simple and modest level, avoiding the honor from the community and the show-off
lifestyle of Tzedakah and fame. Also one should avoid asking questions that
might lead him/her to go against the entire Jewish faith that Hashem is the
single power in the world and that Hashem is one. Run away from philosophy
books, stop asking questions about evolution and researching those theories because
it clearly and simply states that Hashem created Man in one shot and that’s it.
The same goes for doing Teshuva and Rosh HaShanah. Rabbis
tell us to stop wasting seed, women should wear tzeniyut, men should put on
tefillin everyday and pray in a minyan (no matter how difficult it is), avoid
immoral sexual relations, stop staring at every woman on the street who is
barely wearing clothing, etc. etc. etc. The only way we will reach dvekut b’Hashem (clinging and being
glued to Hashem, which is all good) is by being tamim, simple, modest and without question STRIVE to do everything
that the Torah and Gemara teach us. May we be written in The Book of Life with
the Tzadikkim (The Righteous), Amen!
