For the Ilui
Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel For the Refua Shlema of Yaakov Hai
ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Rav Ovadia’s Halacha Emails
(Halachayomit.co.il):
1. The Rambam writes (in the beginning of Hilchot Teshuva) “All Mitzvot in the
Torah, whether man violated them by mistake or on purpose, when he does Teshuva
and returns from sinning, he must do vidui
(confess)
before Hashem. We learn this Halacha from a Pasuk (verse) from Bamidbar,
meaning that this Mitzvah is from the Torah.
2. How does one do the act of vidui, which is a Mitzvah that is done through speech? One says “Ana Hashem, Hatati Aviti Pashati Lefanecha
VeAsiti __________,” Please
Hashem, I have sinned, I have transgressed and I have committed a crime (because
each verb in hebrew pertains to a different type of sin) before you and I have done fill in the blank and I regret what I
did and I am embarrassed from my actions and forever I will not return to do these actions.” Meaning, one
accepts upon him/herself not to do the sin. And this is the backbone of the vidui and one who gets into detail (with
all the heart) with his/her confession before Hashem is blessed.
