For the Ilui
Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel For the Refua Shlema of Yaakov Hai
ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:
1. The ikkar
(foundation and basis) of Teshuva (repentance, especially during these days of
the Aseret Yemei Teshuva) is for the
sinner to leave the het (sin) and
avoid it once and for all by taking it out of his/her thoughts and to decide
using their heart not to repeat it. One should also regret doing the het completely and then Hashem will be
The One who will testify on the sinner’s Teshuva that the sinner will not
repeat it. One should do vidui and
verbally confess to Hashem (and not to anyone else) the sins he/she has done if
their heart also agrees to the confession and regret and future promise not to
return to the sin. However, if one’s heart does not agree to the future promise
not to return to the sin, it is as if the person will not receive rahamim (mercy) from Shamayim (the
Heavens).
2. The way of a person who has done teshuva is to be extremely modest and quiet, where if they fall
into a situation where a foolish friend brings back their past stories of sin
they do not become angry, G-d forbid, or offended in anyway. Rather, a person
who has doen teshuva and is being embarrassed by his/her foolish friends who
are publicizing their old sins (stories) should be happy because this is a zechut (privelige) in their name. Every
time they are embarrassed by their old actions this embarrassment is held for
them as a reward. Whoever acts in a way of forgiving and surrendering to others
actions (ma’avir al midotav for
example not becoming angry because they were not given respect or anything of
the like) the Heavens do not judge them on their sins (ma’avirim lo al kol pesha’av).
