For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L, Yissachar ben Yona ZT’L and Haviva bat Yocheved Z’L.
From Yalkut Yosef:
1. This month, Hodesh Elul, is the time that is fitting for one to review his/her actions and to greaten their times spent learning Torah and being involved in good deeds. One should also do teshuva (repentance) in regards to sins, sinful actions and distance from bad characteristic traits (middot ra’ot). One of the reasons we continuously blow the shofar this month is to awaken the nation to do teshuva (repent).
2. It is correct to have the proper intention during the Beracha
(blessing) of Hashivenu (in the Amida) regarding those who distanced
from Torah and living a Jewish life and began living by bad cultures. This especially
relates to those who have relatives who do not live in the way of Hashem
because during these days of Rahamim (mercy), one has greater help from
Shamayim (heaven) to do Teshuva and the tefillah (prayer) is heard.
