CLD #678

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L & Yissachar ben Yona Z’L.
The “Mazal,” or “horoscope”, of Hodesh Elul (the month we are currently in) is Betulah, which means virgin in Hebrew. The question is: why?

Rav Shelomo Pinto shlit’a gives a beautiful answer that is written in these pamphlets given out at Shuva Yisrael Yeshiva in Manhattan. But first of all we have to understand an important point about ALL JEWS. Every single Jew has a nitzotz or spark, that is lit inside them that is very very holy. This light, no matter how much a Jew sins, no matter where a Jew finds him/herself, is always lit and is never touched by any impure spiritual force. Never. When Hodesh Elul arrives (even though it’s the 23rd day of Hodesh Elul it doesn’t matter, we can still improve) this light glows and ‘awakens.’ From this tiny point that the Jew holds, he/she can return COMPLETELY to Hashem and live a life filled with spiritual light and happiness. Also from this single candle, one can eliminate his/her ‘record’ with Hashem and start over with a clean slate.

Purity
So we see we have the spiritual strength (forget about the physical strength that Hashem blesses us with everyday when we wake up) to get going and improve on a religious level. It is obvious and common knowledge that when something is broken or damaged it is difficult to return it to the way it was before. For example if one drops a glass cup or a fancy ceramic plate it is difficult to return it to the way it was before. However, the marvelous teaching about Elul is that even if we were damaged over and over again now we can return to our original level of purity. When something does not have the ability to get dirty or damaged it is easy to fix it and keep it clean!

This is why this Hodesh has a mazal of Betulah (virgin). A Betulah is a woman who was never touched by man. This is the same kedusha, purity, that befalls Hodesh Elul. Not any type of Yetzer Hara (evil inclination) can ruin or damaged. This is also what is written in holy books.
