For the Ilui
Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L. Lehavdeel For the Refua Shlema of Yaakov Hai
ben Margalit shlit’a.
Translated from Yalkut Yosef Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:
1. If someone has a message recorder running on Shabbat that
is connected to a telephone number (answering machine) and sometimes there are
secular Jews calling on Shabbat, if the person is a doctor or a wholesaler
etc., in places where the population has a majority of non-Jews this machine is
allowed to be running on Shabbat. However, in a place where the majority is
Jewish, one must be stringent and turn it off on Shabbat.
2. It is prohibited to run a Shabbat clock to turn on the TV
or Radio to listen to news or watch TV Shows on Shabbat, because the
programmers in the broadcast location violate many laws (if they are Jewish)
when airing these programs on Shabbat. If one has already violated this law and
the TV is turned on during Shabbat they may not watch or hear any media because
one is benefitting/enjoying from a Jew’s desecration of Shabbat which is
prohibited. [The Yalkut Yosef continues speaking lengthily about the
prohibition of watching TV in Israel or outside Israel on Shabbat and then
speaks about the great prohibition of having a TV in one’s home at all].
Shabbat Shalom!
