CLD #635

For the Ilui Neshama of Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
When learning Masechet Berachot (the first Tractate of The Talmud), you mostly focus on the basics of Judaism, including the laws of Blessings on food, Mitzvot, beneficial activities (such as using the bathroom, learning Torah, praying, etc.). We were in the depth of a suigyah (a piece of Talmud/Gemara in the Masechet) discussing the Halacha of the Beracha (blessing) of Shehakol Nehiyah Bidvaro and how it is a main Beracha that has the Halachic standing to fulfill the obligation and take place of other Berachot.

Meaning one usually says the Beracha of ‘Shehakol’ on foods that do not grow from the ground, such as meat, milk, cheeses, chicken, water, alcohol (except for wine), etc. But if someone accidentally said this Beracha on bread or wine or any other type of edible food that is harmless to the body (bread’s Beracha is Hamotzi, wine’s Beracha is HaGefen) then they do not need to say the appropriate Beracha. Of course the blessing is not the best way to fulfill the obligation of saying a Beracha before food, but it still counts as if you are not stealing from Hashem and are thanking Him for the food/beverage.

In the middle of the Sugiyah there is a statement that Rav Yoseh (Yosef) says which responds to one side of the argument (not relevant for now): “Whoever changes the coin that the Hachamim (our Sages) changed does not fulfill his obligation regarding Berachot.” What Mussar (rebuke/character perfection) can we learn from this?

If our Hachamim said something in the Talmud, Nach, Torah, etc. we must understand it is forever and it does not change because it is “old fashion” or its “not up to date.” Our Hachamim are the closest human beings to angels! They were not perfect but they always tried to reach their spiritual potentials of being real examples of nation under Hashem’s protection, Am Yisrael.

This means that Shabbat still stands in our day. This means that the ceremony for a Brit Milah (circumcision) cannot be done by some non-Jewish doctor. After all, if we have been doing it for over 3,000 years I think the Torah knows what its talking about. This means a woman singing, EVEN IF IT IS NOT ATTRACTIVE, is still prohibited to be heard! This means a mehitza (paritition between men and women) must be up in celebrations, at shuls, etc. AT THE PROPER HEIGHT. And on and on.

The most dangerous type of people spiritually to the destruction of Judaism is the reform movement. Why? Because its one thing to know the difference between a Jew and a non-Jew (in regards to knowing the laws and practicing Judaism, not G-d forbid in regards to “who is more human” or “who is better”). But to meet a Jew just like you and he/she tells you different than what your Rabbi says is the real issue. How can you reform something that is divine? You are a human being.

SHABBAT SHALOM!
