L’yilui Nishamt Avraham ben Ester ZT’L.
From Yalkut Yosef:
1. Batei Knessiyot (Shuls) and Batei Midrashot are called “Mikdash Me’at” which means a small Temple. Kedusha (purity) rests in Batei Knessiyot and Midrashot. Therefore, one should be very cautious in the respect of these holy sites, and to keep them clean. One should sit there with fear of Heaven and to light a candle inside them for respect.
2. In Batei Knessiyot and Batei Midrashot there is no room for
silly behavior and light playful taunting. From a Pasuk in Tanach we learn
Hashem does not want people who jest and joke in these places. It is also
prohibited to speak aimless chatter, which has become ‘allowed’ for many people
and these people should be rebuked to keep the Shechina (divine
presence) from leaving. The Zohar says the punishment of one who speaks in Shul
is so severe that this person does not have a Helech Lelokei Yisrael (a
part of the G-d of Israel).
